What is going on here? The last time we heard from one of Ireland's finest James Vincent McMorrow it was on 2010's "Early in the Morning" where the Dublin troubadour had done a "Bon Iver" and retreated to a remote cottage albeit on the Irish coast to pour out his heart.. It was a very nice album not least the haunting "From the woods" but it didn't quite set him apart from a range of artists who ploughed the sensitive singer songwriter folk rock furrow, It seems that on this new album that McMorrow is determined to address this and come forward with a radically new offer to the listener which attempts to re-calibrate his music. "Post Tropical" owes greater debts to Frank Ocean, The Weeknd, James Blake and latter Justin Vernon than it does Van Morrison & Damien Rice and it is to McMorrow's credit that he has taken this bold stride. Even more laudable is the fact that it works, indeed at its best there are moments of icy beauty on this album which tug on the emotions so hard that they produce genuine warmth. The splendid striking opener "Cavalier" is a completely enchanting song with a great vocal. Certainly it does have more than a hint of James Blake but whereas the latter tends to over complicate McMorrow has produced a silky smooth soul anthem which could equally soundtrack love affairs and broken hearts. He matches it later with the pulsating "Red Dust" where he sings longingly "Sometimes my hands they don't feel like my own, I need someone to love, I need someone to hold". Again this is a kind of songwriting nearer to N.E.R.D than Neil Young but if it is of this quality who cares? Likewise the old Bon Iver influences still leach through not least on "Gold" but its very well done.Read more ›

True, it's a departure from his last album. But an excellent one. That said, it took me two listens to get into the album because I was still carrying expectations from Early in the Morning.

To all those saying he's trying to sound like Bon Iver, read a little about JVM's creative process. Locks himself in a room and lets no one else in until his ideas have become the music. I think the high-pitched voice and the similar genre makes that an easy statement to make, but it's quite disingenuous. This music evokes a different feeling altogether than any of Bon Iver's work and original creativity is clear throughout this record.

In response to the reviewers concerned about poor production quality: I don't think the average listener will even notice. I worked hard to hear the distortion mentioned in the comments, but I couldn't detect it at all. If you're a music producer, maybe it will bother you, but otherwise don't let this prevent you from purchasing the album. From best I can tell, the Spotify version is the same as the mp3 here, so you can try before you buy.

There are times in traffic that I need Muse to help me sort of scream and unwind. Once I'm wound down though this is the stuff that keeps me mellow. Yeah, it all sort of sounds like one long song, but it's a really good song!

McMorrow's first LP was and is sensational....one can expect nothing less on his new LP which has truly ascended to a new level. Give it a listen and if your ears enjoy what they hear....then let your mind decide by what your heart desires.

I first heard JVM on his live studio performance of Cavalier, which I immediately loved. This album is a beautiful work of sonic art. Just put it on, lie down on your bed and listen, beginning to end.

This was my first real exposure to JVM and I was overwhelmed by his total control of that unique voice. What a wonderfully calming experience .I have him on at work, in the car and at home so I can be transported whenever I feel the need.. Good stuff Maynard.

James Vincent McMorrow does not shy away from new and different in his second album. Still maintains a lot of the same qualities in his music that made me love the first album as much as I did. Really digging the direction his music is headed

I *liked* the first album "Early in the Morning" so when I saw that a new album was out I wasn't too excited and didn't rush to listen to it. WOW - big mistake there!!! I would liken Post Tropical to something like Bon Iver or S. Carey. It's mellow, he uses falsetto in amazing ways. The entire album puts me in a trance and I simply adore it.
