Watch it!
I read the "Postman" some years ago. A writer myself I have admired the work of James M. Cain immensely. Much of this movie sticks very close to the book but with a few additions for the movie. Nicholson is great as always, his facial expressions alone make this movie worth watching. Scenery and period were so good you felt like it was the 1930's. Do you self a favor...

I don't know why, but my strongest memory for this film is the ravings for it in Playboy as best picture of the year. I can't disagree more that it is that good, but it shouldn't be forgotten. The book is a classic, that has never been fully realized. The three parts of the film that are important are: the connection between the two as a sexual bond, the intricacy of the plot to kill the husband, and the social themes of depression era haves and have nots. This film does get the sexual lust very well. This movie is georgeous and well acted. This may be the best use of this mid 80's Warner Film Stock period. That being said, like other reviewers have pointed out, there is not a wide screen formatted version of this film that exists. its such a waste. The plot to kill the husband and the legal technicalities are so garbled in this version that it almost requires the audience to already know the story. By the time she dies at the end of the film, there isn't the connection that the poor killed the rich and are paying for their sins. There isn't even a mention of what Happens to Jack, that he gets tried for murdering his wife, even though it was an accident. This movie chooses to focus on the loss of his love, his flame. Just love, lust and loss. There is no connection or reasoning for it. more of a you do what you want and sit happens approach to appeal to a hippie audience. I also didn't fully get the resentment of the upper class from these two finding a bond, or remorse for what they would do, daring fate to catch up with them. This movie is all about heat, and beauty. But it has both in spades.

After numerous delays for over a year, this film is finally released on Blu-ray. The moody, amber-toned photography of Sven Nykvist is seen to its best advantage and the film looks great. Apparently, some critics have mentioned that the film is tightly compressed but I didn't notice any defects on my 40 inch screen. Viewers with screens over 65 inches may notice artifacts and noise.
The film itself is a sometimes slow moving and episodic remake and one that is much different from the 1946 original. This one has a totally different ending and the film focuses more on the "love story" aspect over the criminal. It may not have the hard-edged film noir characteristic of the earlier film but this one is much steamier (the famous kitchen table sex scene initially got the film an "X" rating). Jack Nicholson, although a tad too old for the role, is great in the lead role. The film though belongs to Jessica Lange, whose intense, smoldering characterization, put her on the map as a serious actress. Her only prior film work had been "King Kong" and a few minor roles. This film opened the door to her getting "Frances" and subsequent roles that justly her position as one of the best actresses in the business.
A scene specific commentary is provided by director Bob Rafelson, Jack Nicholson and David Mamet and runs about 80 minutes. It is an interesting commentary with some surprising facts (such as Meryl Streep had tested for the role and was the first choice until Lange came on board).
That said, I think the cover art is the tackiest I've ever seen!

I ordinarily don't like remakes....most of them are stinkers in my opinion (1998's Psycho was a really horrible remake), but I actually enjoyed this one thanks to top notch performances by Jack Nicholson and Jessica Lange as Frank and Cora.
It follows the basic story from James M. Cain's novel....drifter Frank Chambers (Nicholson) stops by a local diner run by a Greek man named Nick who offers him a job as mechanic. Frank is at first reluctant to take the job, but one look at the Greek's wife, Cora, and he changes his mind and starts right away. It isn't long before he and Cora start up a sizzling affair. Frank convinces Cora to run away with him, but Cora gets cold feet and wants to stay at the diner. She convinces him that it would be better to just murder Nick so they can be together and keep the diner....however fate throws in more than one monkey wrench in their plans....
I loved the 1946 original but I also really love this version....if I have one disappointment with the 1981 film is that it doesn't quite end like the original movie and the novel did. Justice needed to be served for BOTH characters not just one of them. Why the filmmakers didn't do this I don't know. Though I suppose of the two of them Cora probably deserved the comeuppance the most since it was HER idea to kill her husband.
But be that as it may, it's still a damn fine movie in its own right. Highly recommend it.

This product arrived 2 and a half weeks after I’d ordered it. Then it were only compatible with a North American DVD player. I were very disappointed as it was for a friends birthday present and I thought it were super stupid of the sellers to send it.
