“Well, if it isn’t Laila Donovan.”

That baritone voice. She froze, but every cell in her body yawned and awakened as if from a long sleep. In high school, his voice wrangled agreements to meet under the bleachers, swig her first taste of beer and sneak out of the house at night.

“See you haven’t lost that Coke-bottle figure.”

Inhaling a deep breath, Laila straightened. Too late to wish she hadn’t indulged during the buffet, she turned around and promptly lost her voice.

Thick eyebrows framed expressive charcoal-colored eyes while full lips curved into a smile. She’d always been a sucker for well-shaped lips since first tasting his. She allowed her gaze to travel the faint line of curling black hair that led below his swimming trunks. The muscles cording his thighs and legs bore witness to how good a shape he was in, despite the fact he no longer played professional football. Was it too much to ask for him to have a beer belly instead of the flat board of muscle he carried?

The walking chocolate bar. “Matthew Parker,” she whispered the name of her childhood neighbor, best friend, boyfriend…and greatest rival. Losing the valedictorian spot to him and having to settle for salutatorian hurt for sure, but she’d moved on. Hadn’t she?

He bowed at the waist. “Long time no see.”

Wearing a wide grin, Belinda climbed from the pool, unabashedly eavesdropping as she neared them.

Clearing her throat, Laila recovered from her daze. “Matthew, this is Belinda Rowan, my coworker. Belinda, this is Matthew Parker. We attended high school together.”

“Hello, Belinda,” The words rumbled from his throat, as he turned his attention from Laila.

“The Matthew Parker?” Her friend’s wide smile meant Laila was in for an intense interrogation once they were back in their room. “Wow. Wait ‘til I tell my husband I met you.” She backed away a few steps. “I’ll let you two talk about old times or catch up on unfinished business.”

“Are you sure?” Laila stared at her, signaling with her eyes her intense wish for her friend to stay. This man brought back too many memories, too many wants and for damn sure, too many regrets.

“No biggie. See you later.” She turned away but not before she flashed a thumbs-up.

When Matthew took a step closer, Laila reached down, unfolded the sarong and casually wrapped the sheer material around her waist again, driven by the need for a barrier between him and the unsettling heat generating between her thighs. She praised her composure when her hands didn’t shake. Although she wore a one-piece swimsuit instead of a bikini, under his searing gaze she may as well be nude.

He interrupted the action, covering her hands with his. “Leave it off. I’ll join you in the pool.”
Her flesh tingled where he touched her. How could he still make her body weak? Shouldn’t she have outgrown such a reaction to him by now?
