Wow, I had no idea that Whistler was so witty! I never think of a painter, especially one who made his own mum look so dour, as having such a sense of humor, but he was also ambitious and rightfully protective of his work. It's amazing to read excerpts of his defamation trial. He refused to say anything about what was in his paintings. He wanted the viewer to use her own eyes/mind to decide what's there. He was abstract before that was a word used for art. A remarkable talent and an easy to read account of this difficult time in his life.
