The story is adorable, following a gloomy fish who learns he doesn’t have to spread his “dreary wearies” to others. The rhyming text is catchy and fun to read out loud—my little one loves the repetitive lines and chimes in with “Blub, bluuuub!” every time.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 12, 2024"Pout-Pout Fish" by Deborah Diesen is a delightful underwater adventure that dives into themes of self-discovery, friendship, and the power of a positive outlook. 🐟 The protagonist, Mr. Pout-Pout Fish, initially sees himself as inherently gloomy, spreading "dreary-wearies" to everyone he encounters. However, as the story unfolds, he learns that he has the ability to change his perspective and bring joy to those around him.
What makes this book truly special is its engaging rhyming narrative that effortlessly flows like the ocean waves. The repetition and rhythm not only captivate young readers but also make it an enjoyable read-aloud experience for parents. The whimsical illustrations by Dan Hanna complement the storyline beautifully, depicting the underwater world and its lively inhabitants with vibrant colors and expressive characters.
As a parent, I appreciate how this book subtly introduces emotional intelligence. It teaches children about the influence of attitude on their interactions with others and promotes the idea that one has the power to shape their own narrative. The transformative journey of Mr. Pout-Pout Fish instills a valuable lesson about resilience and the potential for positive change. 📚✨

I bought this book on a whim as it appears in a lot of recommended reading lists for young children.
It’s an excellent read, so much fun and always brings a smile to my 1 year olds face when I shower him with kisses at the end. Lots of opportunities for the reader to put on their best pouty voice and get involved in the story!
I have read some negative feedback regarding this encouraging lack of consent behaviour on a different forum. (All a bit OTT if you ask me)
No I’m sorry I just don’t get that perspective at all.
Highly recommend!
MelanieReviewed in Canada on October 18, 20185.0 out of 5 stars So cute and fun!
I just adore this book! It's so fun to read and it quickly became one of my young toddlers favourites. It's a fun book to do silly voices with, and the pictures are bright, colourful, and expose your child to underwater creatures they might not typically see.
I'm quite picky about the books I buy my son because he loves being read to; so after you've read him the book the first time, you have to immediately read it 10 more times after that, and then numerous times every other day! - so I try to find something that remains engaging for me as well. This book is well written with a great rhythm. I haven't looked into buying any of the other pout-pout books, but I would do so in a heartbeat if they are as well done as this one.
