About the Author

Patricia Reilly Giff (b. 1935) grew up in Brooklyn, New York. She is the author of the popular Polk Street Mystery series, as well as several award-winning novels for middle-grade readers. After graduating from Marymount College, Giff taught reading for twenty years before writing her first novel. Many of her books are ALA-ALSC Notable Children’s Books and ALA-YALSA Best Books for Young Adults, including Lily’s Crossing and Pictures of Hollis Woods, for which Giff won Newbery Honors. Giff lives in Weston, Connecticut, with her husband.

Blanche Sims was born in Cleveland, Ohio. She has worked as an illustrator for young people’s art at Famous Artists School and later at Xerox in the art department. Then she became a children’s book illustrator. Among the many books she has illustrated is the Polk Street series. Sims lives in Sandy Hook, CT.

Grade 2-5 In the first book, a situation that is a crisis for most children is brought to a happy conclusion by two affable children. Powder Puff, Dawn's cat, jumps out of her arms and into a car. Dawn and her friend Jason have only two cluesa jelly cookie and part of a license plate numberto help them to solve the mystery of the missing cat. Ever-resourceful Dawn perseveres, thinks through the clues, and finds her cat. In the second book, Dawn finds a purse that is claimed by three different children. Inside the purse is a shopping list, some sandy grit that looks like cookie crumbs, and 17 cents. By asking questions and thinking, Dawn discov ers some answers. Nothing heady about this mystery, just a nice steady pace and likable characters. With con trolled vocabulary and entertaining il lustrations, these are easy, pleasant reading. Dawn solves missing cat mystery

Dawn's cat, Powder Puff, gets frightened and runs away. Before Dawn can catch him, he jumps into a dusty red car. The driver, not realizing she has a passenger or that Dawn is trying to stop her, drives away. Dawn has only one clue. She has two letters from the license plate.

The Polka Dot Private Eye series is just right for new readers.
