Have fun reading this, because you will find that Eddie must have enjoyed sharing this all with you, because in reading this book, his whole purpose seems to be to get us all to not take wine so seriously, but to smile and have fun with friends, and make new friends.
I'm looking forward to introducing those friends to many of his suggestions. It should keep us busy for months. Very cool. -art
As a book on its own, it's well written. Eddie interjects some great stories with information on how to "Power Entertain." There are also parts where he has comments from other Master Sommeliers about what kinds of wine to buy. I never felt like it was some self-help book that was going down a checklist of things to do. If that was the case, it could have been a third of the size, boring, and forgettable.
If you are looking for a book about wine, this isn't it (he does include a chapter about the different varietals). This is mainly for the person who entertains clients to close business deals. Having the knowledge and resources of HOW to do Power Entertaining to give you a leg up on your buddy in the next cubicle/office. I've been in the regular business world where deals are made over dinner and drinks and not in a meeting room. Too often the meal and wine or drinks are pretty standard or forgettable the next day. Even if the deal was made. This helps make your entertaining memorable and you'll get a reputation of being great at it. What does that mean? You get chosen over someone else to take a client or potential client out or you get chosen to host a dinner at a trade show over someone else.
With all that said, I also think this is a great read for wine professionals. As a wine professional it opened my eyes to what we can do in the industry to separate ourselves from the others who do the same old boring boilerplate events. Those of us that are flexible with the people who want to put on events can make a name for ourselves. Even if the person you are talking to isn't necessarily looking to have anything other than the standard, you can offer them the exceptional.
