To set up in a PC (this is for VISTA but other OS will be similar), plug it into the microphone slot which is a similar looking slot to a headphone slot. Then left click once on the Windows LOGO (bottom left on desktop screen) - Left click once on CONTROL PANEL - find SOUND then double left click to open - left click once on the RECORDING Tab - FRONT MIC or MICROPHONE (highlight by left clicking once) - left click once on CONFIGURE button - choose SET UP MICROPHONE- choose DESKTOP MICROPHONE- Read the sentence into your mic about 3-5 inches away - left click once on NEXT - left click once on FINISH(Done, That's it!). Repeat if prompted to do so.
>>To adjust sound output after set up (it's set up at a default but if you want to change it)- CONTROL PANEL - SOUND - RECORDING TAB - then Double click on MICROPHONE or FRONT MIC (which ever has the green check) to open that particular window - LEVELS Tab - put Front MIC to 100 & BOOST to +10.0 DB- NEXT & that is it : )
Those level settings seem to give the clearest sound without any distortion but you can adjust them anyway you want.
It's ready to use. If you go on a site that utilizes a mic for voice chat, then you may have to set it up (connect it) on that particular site. It's compatible with Skype & other sites/services that have voice. Otherwise it's ready to use on your computer. Very simple.
I would also like to add that the top part of the mic detaches so you can plug it in to a lap top. Then you can just re-attach it to the stand for use on your desktop again. The mic itself is a very light weight simple gadget but the sound quality is very good.
I have not had it that long but so far it's working well.
The Mic itself is really light, the base is hollow and it feels relatively cheap. The mic boom is rotatable in any direction and the tip of the mic can move up and down. The quality of the cable is quite poor. It is very thin rubber, tangles easily, and feels like it could snap at any moment. If this microphone will be stationary for most of the time, this shouldn't be an issue, however if you move your desktop and peripherals often like I do, it feels like it could be damaged very easily.
The actual mic detaches from the boom and you can use it in your laptop. I wouldn't recommend using it like this normally because the electrical noise is increased noticeably if you remove it from the base and plug it directly into the computer.
As for the quality, its about equal to my thinkpad in built mic, but much better than the audio technica ATR-4750(don't buy that mic). It is surprisingly loud and although there is some buzz, windows noise suppression fixes it. I would recommend still boosting this mic +20db in windows if it is farther than a foot from from your face.
There really aren't any good microphones in the $25-$50 mark. Most people just recommend a Blue microphone which is at least $50. That being said there are a lot of really really bad, unusable mics under $50. This is probably one of the best sound quality wise.
The product may have a GE logo but it is actually manufactured by "jasco products", and it says it comes with a limited 1 year warranty(which I wouldn't put too much faith into).
If you have doubts about whether a cheap mic is a good investment, I'd say it is. Plus, for the price, even if it does break it's no biggie. Mine hasn't broken yet in over a year, and works very well.
