Sharon Danzger, author Super-Productive, 120 Strategies to Do More and Stress Less.
Dave, suggests the next time you are at a cocktail party to ask someone "what do you like to do for fun?" He says many people hesitate or have a challenge answering that question. As a networker, I'm excited to use that question. I think it will get a lot more engagement, than "What do you do for a living"? Talk about a way to have fun and really get to know someone and build powerful relationships.
That question and the realization that I need to build an "Oases" with my wife was well worth the time investment. I encourage you to read this book and see what golden nuggets you can dig out for yourself.
"The Power of Having Fun" helped me shift my thinking. Rather than scheduling work so I could "earn" fun, I've come to believe that fun belongs on my calendar as a planned, necessary part of life; not as a conditional reward (that I often fail to attain) for a hard day's work.
Just as companies give their employees vacation time to help them stay productive, I now recognize that we need smaller outlets in our day-to-day lives to function well.
Many self-help books are so densely packed with anecdotes and the science behind the ideas within that it's hard to find the parts that actually "help." Crenshaw, on the other hand, provides just enough support to help you understand why his advice is important and just enough humor to make reading "fun." He quickly cuts to the chase and gives you easy, actionable exercises to help you start improving your quality of life from the first chapter.
One concern I had early on was that the book seemed to target people are so busy with work and family obligations that they don't have time for fun. That's not always me; sometimes I feel like I have plenty of time but instead of using it towards things I value, I spend it zoning out on Netflix and YouTube and feeling guilty I'm not doing something more productive.
But this book is every bit as relevant to me as to workaholics. I discovered that carving out time for fun from my day, week, and year wasn't just about making room for fun but about taking inventory of the things that bring me joy and choosing to place as much value on those as I do on my obligations.
I'm just getting started on the path Crenshaw has carved out for me but I can already see how treating fun as a necessary part of life will help me enjoy and succeed in my work, my relationships, and my personal pursuits. I'm excited about the rich life this book will help me achieve.
