A friend of mine knew I was going through a difficult time after the death of my husband. She told me that "The Power of Inspiration" changed her life. She buys the book and the CDs used and gives it out to people who seem like they are "stuck" in life. She gave me both the "Inspiration" book and CD. I haven't heard the CD yet. Maybe Dr. Dyer's advice is more palatable on a CD.
I was having trouble making the big decisions about life, such as, "Should I quit my job? Should I get a different career altogether? Should I move to a different house or apartment in the area? Should I move to another state and start over? Should I sell everything and live in an RV so I can pick up stakes and move if I feel like it?" In addition, I couldn't even make the small decisions of life, like what of my husband's stuff should I get rid of? People would ask me, "Well now that you can do anything with your life, what do you want to do?" I had put all of my "wants" secondary to my husband and kids for so long, I no longer had a clue what I "wanted" out of life. I don't want anything. I want to get rid of all of my own stuff so that my kids don't have to go through cleaning out all of my own stuff and selling my house after I die. That's it. Then I want to wait at the "Bus Stop of Death" with just my one piece of luggage. Can Wayne Dyer fix that? I don't think so. All of the plans my husband and I had made for retirement (which would be coming in about 11 years for me and 3 years for him) were gone.
My plans included my husband and/or kids. My kids are all single with no kids, no homes, mobile freelancing jobs and no "place" or even state to call their own. They didn't need me. If I moved to whatever state they were in this year, next year, they will all be in different states. I had been so disconnected for so long from what I wanted out of life, I really had no idea what I wanted anymore.
Hence the book. Did it help? A little. I read it on my way going to a convention for my career. I hate my career and I hate these conventions and try to avoid interacting with my peers because I don't like most of them, either. I'm a strong introvert, Wayne Dyer doesn't like introverts.
So I was able to attempt to put into practice some of the lessons in the book, mostly which had to do with being extroverted, friendly and helpful. Friendly and helpful I can do (with people I know), being an extrovert is a real stretch, especially with the judgmental blowhards that seem to dominate my field. I would try to make eye contact and smile. Usually they would ignore me, not acknowledge that I smiled at them and would keep walking. Oh, they know who I am, so it's not like they could pretend that they didn't. I would approach them to make small talk and they would immediately turn away as if engaged in something very important. So I would tap them on the arm and they would swing around and pretend that they hadn't seen me. I would talk to them just long enough to say hello and it's good to see them, how are things and goodbye. Not enough to make them feel that I'm glomming onto them for the entire meeting. Well guess what? When forced to acknowledge me, they would make small talk but it was difficult for them. Me too. Maybe Wayne Dyer should talk to them instead. I would like that.
What I learned is that on the Bell Curve of Life, Wayne Dyer is on one end and I'm on the other. I am a miserable failure at Wayne Dyer's teachings. And that's OK, even though Wayne would probably say it's not OK. I like it better when I'm ignored. If somebody really wants to talk to me, they'll let me know. Maybe they'll smile or tap me on the shoulder or call my name. Otherwise, I'm just going to leave them alone. I'll figure out my life's purpose on my own in my own time.
