The lens shows severe spherical aberration. Only 30 to 50% of the center of the lens is useful.
The LED lights are bluish and only one side of a subject is illuminated with an almost blindingly bright light. This creates extreme shadows, which makes it difficult to see inside cracks, grooves, and gaps. This is probably not a great magnifier for mechanical or electronic parts.
The lens is made of glass, which is good for a cheap magnifier because you can stick it in your pocket without a cover and be less concerned about scratches. It makes a good bang-around magnifier that you don't have to worry about.
At $7 with free shipping I think the price was fair, but only just. If the magnifier was any worse it wouldn't be worth any price.
Some general rules in simple magnifiers: the higher the magnification factor (5X, 10X, 20X, etc) the smaller the diameter of the lens or viewing area, the closer the working distance between your eye and the glass or loupe, and the smaller the area magnified.
This item is no exception. The 40X magnification means a very tiny area is magnified and you have to be close to the magnifier. This device would be used for examining *very* small detail. I can't even think of an application for regular use, but I'm sure there are some.
Given a do-over, I wouldn't get this as I have no use for it. It's not particularly well made, though I didn't have a problem with the battery compartment lid falling off. The lens quality was fair to poor. I didn't expect much, but did expect a *little* better.
At less than Eight dollars it's just ok, assuming you have occasional use for a light-duty, high-power magnifier.
The image is bright and very clear. I love it.
Real Problem: Due to the way the lens is shaped, and where the lights are placed (too low, somewhat behind the black circular lens frame) if you put the magnifier close enough to the object to get rid of the image warping from the lens, then part of the image is in shadow. If you pull the magnifier further away from the object in order to get rid of the shadow, then there is a fair amount of warping around the edges of the lens which makes the correctly imaged portion of the object much smaller. There is a sweet spot (of distance from the object) that you have to hit in order to get no shadow and minimal image warping. That's frustrating. It would have been more helpful had they added a circular tube of clear plastic onto the lens frame so that you could just set the magnifier down onto the object and hit that sweet spot each time. That way those of us with no coordination or shaky hands would have a much easier time using this magnifier. I am going to try to find something like that to see if it works or if it cuts down on the light too much before I give this to the kids. So good luck using this yourself.
Another problem: IF the led bulbs ever go out or get busted from rough usage, there is no way to replace them.
Otherwise, the product seems sturdy and lightweight enough for kids. The bulbs are bright enough too.
I suppose this is one of those instances that "you get what you pay for" moments. >:^(

The button for the light doesn't make a connection so you have to keep pressure on it to get the light to work or the light goes out.Published 1 month ago by T. Tanner
