About the Author
My name is Dr. Fred and I have been retired for over 13 years. I was an Optometrist, specializing in developmental and behavioral vision for more than 33 years. I gave sight to others so as to learn from their insight. I am happily married to a lovely lady, 48 years and counting. She supported me during my episodes and I owe my life to her. At 70, I have knowledge and experience when it comes to dealing with Bipolar Disorder. My mission is to help others in achieving emotional stability without episodes. I’ve lived 50 years with Bipolar I. For the first 25 years I dealt with over 5 episodes. Since then, I have transformed my life by changing my thoughts and committing to a consistent supply of Lithium. I’ve maintained years of "episode-free emotional stability". Some would classify this as a "Functional Bipolar”. Perhaps I might classify it as "Functionally Cured". I was one of the first to receive Lithium when the FDA approved it in 1971. It has kept me stable for the last 28 years, along with knowing the “Power of Being Positive with Bipolar Disorder”.

The author also gives a comprehensive explanation of the scientific and clinical rationale of bipolar disorder, which everyone who suffers from bipolar disorder and their families and friends would find quite interesting and enlightening.
The author sets the precedent that living with bipolar disorder is not actually that bad, once he/she realizes that positivity and a strong support system makes all the difference.
Kudos to you, Dr. Fred!
My medical knowledge and background is very limited, particularly in the area of mental health. I found the "Power of Positivity" to be extremely comprehensive from a medical, humanistic and emotional standpoint. It is medically quite detailed and technical and can be challenging, but it is also an extremely interesting, informative, enjoyable and emotional read.
Having now read Dr. Fred's book and discussing it with several friends, I have learned that bipolar disorder is, unfortunately, existent in the lives of many people in all walks of life. I have learned that two close friends and their family members have been diagnosed with it for years....unknown to me, and not dealing with it very effectively. They will shortly have Dr. Fred's wonderful book!!
optimal mental health!
Buy this book if you know somebody that deals with depression and bi-polar mania. It will give you try insight into how someone has successfully dealt with the challenge. I see it helping me already.
Thanks for writing it, Dr. Fred.
At the age of 70, Fred Von Gunten has had five episodes and his last 28 years has been symptom free from being on a low dose of Lithium and his Power of Positivity approach. He considers himself “functionally cured”.
This book goes into considerable length of the most used and successful psychotherapy treatments that are available, such as Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT), Interpersonal Social Rhythm Therapy (IPSRT), and, Family-Focused Therapy (FFT), in conjunction with pharmacotherapy.
The author’s most strong theory in this book is how the “Power of Positivity” can set one self free from both mental and physical illness symptoms just by having a positive outlook. Throughout the book, Fred Von Gunten, has included many quotes, from others, that have inspired him to maintain his positivity.
I am very pleased this approach has worked out so well for the author, and possibly others, but from my lived experience, or others not yet in the maintenance phase, it is my opinion that Fred Von Gunten’s theory, positivity cures, may not always be the case for long-term freedom of symptoms. Nevertheless, this is a solid book on a different approach to mental wellness.
I was given this book as a gift in exchange for an honest review.
