I purchased this book when my son was being divorced by his wife, leaving him with a huge debt she had racked up (he was unaware, trusting her), 4 teenage sons to raise, and, also, his struggle financially with a new business in a small town.
Needless to say, he was shocked, hurt, depressed, scared, struggling to "do right" by everyone involved.
(I.e., taking on her debt to pay off leaving her debt-free, striving to not hate her, to try to understand her, making sure he supplied fairly her alimony, being involved in his sons' high school activities, putting food on the table, making payroll for his employees, struggling to meet all his bills, etc.) AND above it all, (despite panic attacks by the enemy when the income did not match the outgo) struggling to trust that GOD IS IN CONTROL!!!
I gave him the book, hopeful it would be a help for him & encouraged him to "experiment". He did & it has been a help!
Caruthers writes about his and other people's everyday experiences where it is easy to take our minds off our sovereign God and focus on what we want/expect. To read about how their life disappointments, etc., unfolded, reminded me that everything that happens is for God's good purpose. I catch myself remembering the power in praising Him in every circumstance more often and have significantly decreased the number of times I question Him.
Life changing truth.
Is He praiseworthy or not!? Is He sovereign or not!? Does He care or doesn't He? Sometimes there is NO GRAY AREA where God is concerned. God is worthy and deserving of our PRAISE in all of our turmoil, and in many cases we should be praising Him FOR our turmoil. We must trust that He is doing a work in us for the greater good of someone else and for the glory of His kingdom.
Count it all joy my brothers when you face various trials. What a hard word in a harsh world, and yet, isn’t He always working in us to give us both the desire to please Him and the power to please Him, even when we're flat out broken?
For the joy set before Him He endured His cross, shall we not also follow Him and endure our struggle? Can we believe that we also will overcome? And can we believe that He has placed a joyous future before us as well? Praising Him tells our soul that it’s okay to trust Him. So let us lay aside every encumbrance and sin which entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, let's not be weary and lose heart, but PRAISE Him, for He is truly trustworthy.
