I really liked this story. Currently, I am 33 and have lifelong friends that I still get together with whenever I can and go on little adventures with. It was easy for me to see my friends in the characters, so I almost felt like I was puddle hopping right along with the characters. The book was well written and edited and the author clearly has experience with travel in the areas he was writing about. The opening of the story was a bit slow for me, which is why I marked the book as a 4 rather than a 5. Overall, this was great, and fans of adventure stories and coming of age stories will greatly enjoy this piece.
The novel could be described as a somewhat-oxymoronic “relaxing adventure.” Though the stakes are high for the guys involved, and there’s plenty of action, it’s really a fun and quick read – the kind of book you take on vacation. Or better yet: it’s the kind of book that feels like going on vacation.
Given that author Colenbrander has led a fairly adventurous life of his own, he lends a fair bit of credibility and realism to this tale, so it seems less like an adventurous fantasy, and more like something that could happen. However, he does veer to the fantastical in some respects (all the adventurers are uncommonly handsome, for one), but in an adventure story, that’s sometimes the order of the day.
If you want an escape, complete with local color about the Congo, and even some tender moments among friends, then The Power of Seventy is an entertaining choice. You might not want to get into the predicaments they do, but you’ll be glad to sit back and enjoy the ride.
The plot revolves around treasure hunt that the three main characters are attempting, nothing more and nothing less. There is plenty of action, fast paced fun, entertaining dialogues and likeable characters here. I love that the three heroes are men in their seventies, it is cool to see elderly men as heroes in action packed story. It would be great to see a movie based on this book, I can already see Harrison Ford as Rusty, tearing it up along the river in Congo. Ridiculously likeable and enjoyable book, don't miss it.
