Calinda B invites us into the community of Charming, Alaska. The town manager, Chia, has her hands full. The characters are unique, each with their own charm and secrets. There is a lot of tongue in cheek humor. There is a vast array of paranormal activity, a thrilling mystery and a deeper message all intertwined in this opening book of this series. I can't wait to see what Chia is going to get into next!

I very much enjoyed Power Shift, the book is downright fun. I loved all the different things going on: the main plot and antagonist, the secondary characters like her roommate and Cecil, the ghosts, and of course the love interest, Hung. Chia is adorable, but her cuteness is balanced by her unhinged lust, and I loved how frustrated and at odds she was with herself. The shapeshifters, shamans, and even vampires appealed to my paranormal side, and I thought Calinda did a great job of tying all the loose ends yet leaving room for the story to continue in the series.

The only thing that bothered me was that it seemed a little long, I thought some of the internal monologue could’ve been trimmed to enhance the pacing. Well that and I did have a problem with Hung’s name origin, but that’s only because I’m a reformed grammar nazi. I’ll bet most people won’t even notice let alone wince.

Overall, I recommend this book as a fun paranormal romance read. Looking forward to picking up the sequel.

Chia Petit is the Charming Alaska town manager and when ultra-sexy bounty hunter Hung Durand arrives back in town, this sharpshooting gal is prepared for battle which is a good thing because somebody’s out to steal her town in this offbeat paranormal fantasy.

Eccentric is a very good word to describe Chia, she’s got some very unusual quirks and annoying habits but when this charismatic woman decides to take charge that’s just what she’ll do and the reader can’t help but get lost in this humorous and exciting story as she sets out to save her town. All the characters in the story are peculiar in their own charming ways and demand attention and the fast pace keeps readers on their toes with lots of suspense, excitement, humor and romance.

Tension and expectation builds throughout the story as the danger to shifters escalates and some weird magic seems to take over the town and let’s not forget the sexual tension that spices up the story every time Chia comes in contact with Hung. The well written scenes paint vivid images that capture the imagination while the well-orchestrated events ensure that the reader has to know what happens next.

The author has created a bizarre but fascinating little town with some very unusual elements and characters and while I was concerned that I wasn’t going to like Chia very much at the beginning, she soon charmed me, had me chuckling and cheering her on, so I can’t wait to visit Charming Alaska again and find out what happens next.

First, I have to let you know I received this book from the author in return for a review (got it through Jay @ Choosybookworm. I highly recommend both the site and Calinda B., the author.
I enjoyed Chia's adventures in HER town of Charming, Alaska (she's the town manager). The town comes complete with shifters, vampires, and Chia's very own personal ghosts, 6 at the beginning, and she manages to give birth to one more during the story. Her ghosts represent points in her life that she's not proud of, and she has no clue how to run them off.
At the start of her tale, she is the elected town manager, and is very proud of the fact that she has initiated many rules that protect her shifter, paranormal population without alerting all the normal people of the fact that the town has many, many paranormals. However, one of her rules - bounty hunters are unable to ply their trade in her town, means bounty hunter Hung Durand, with whom Chia has a love/hate relationship (kind of loves to hate him while she longs for him) is unable to hunt and capture the vampiress Sultana. She is hiding in Charming, and represents a very decent bounty if Hung can capture her. However, her capture would present a giant problem. D'Ranged, Chia's vampire tenant, is currently having an affair with Sultana, and would take it very badly if anything happened to her. And if D'Ranged is unhappy, Chia will be miserable!
Add Red Mountainbear (a crazed rival who is trying to take over the town by any means possible, up to and including murder), and Cecil, a Husky shifter with a great heart, and Chia has her hands full trying to avoid death, keep her town office, and stay out of Hung's clutches, no matter how much she would prefer that to fighting with him.

I thought something so different when I first read the synopsis, but I loved this book. LOL I like that, when things go better than expectations. This is the story of a girl, who apprentices with a witch, who isn't something extra special outright, but because she works hard, cares for others, and her surrounding, she becomes great. She does great things. And in the process, she finds herself, her home, and someone to share it with. Seriously, good story!!

Rose is 14 years old at the start of the book. She's the older, not so pretty, tomboy who would rather climb trees, hunt, be dirty, than be pretty, learn to cook and think of marriage. Actually, she is so dead set against marriage that she says she'll become a pirate so she doesn't have to marry. HA! I loved her. She is hilarious, she gets mad at herself but never gives up. She worries about the land where she lives, her family, the animals in the forest. And of course, the wolf with a curse who can talk. She is sent to her mom's friend, who is the witch to learn. She wanted so bad to see magic, that she forgot to pay attention where the magic was really happening. Until it's thrown into her face, because of that wolf. Bastian. He's something. So she becomes Little Red Riding Hood. Except her hood isn't red, and the wolf no longer wants to eat her, but to use her to break his curse. And his cursor is really mad that she is actually breaking parts of his curse, so she now has another witch after her and all she wants is to learn.

The characters are so much a big part of this story. I loved Bastian. Just wait, you will too. I really liked Gilbert, and I felt bad for him, but I won't tell you why.
