"In this hope-filled offering, Orloff (Emotional Freedom) posits that the only way to live a powerful, successful life is to surrender to it. Blending neuroscience, energy medicine, psychiatry, and the art of intuition, Orloff, an assistant clinical professor of psychiatry at UCLA, addresses major life issues by breaking them into 12 different “surrenders,” including “redefining true success, power, and happiness”; the “four vital insights into power and letting go”; “cultivating impeccable communication”; and “exploring the divinity of your body and sexuality.” With a compassionate and empowering tone, she counsels others not to micromanage life details, but to be in “flow” with them and to look for the lessons in all situations as well as to refuse to live a life governed by fear. Self-assessment quizzes allow readers to measure their level of involvement in self-defeating behaviors; helpful and non-judgmental suggestions provide strategies for overcoming these negative mind-sets. Orloff demonstrates her own adherence to these principles by unflinchingly sharing her own experiences in the spirit of teaching others." —Publishers Weekly

The Ecstasy of Surrender is about the benefits of letting go (exhilaration, empowerment, abundance, etc.). The information is not necessarily new if you've been in some circles, but it definitely is a good interactive guide to study. Dr. Orloff's voice comes through by showing us how to intuitively surrender. Also, she personalizes the topics by putting her stamp on it - quizzes with lists and summaries. A few years ago I had the chance of talking with Dr. Orloff when she was at the Commonwealth Club. This woman is so real (down to earth). She practices what she teaches. She oozes kindness and exudes wisdom. Her warm personality and authenticity shines through in this book.

At over 400 pages, this is a guidebook to come back to and marinate in so that the principles can be integrated. She's very comprehensive that you don't need to read her previous books to understand some previously touched upon subjects (such as dealing with passive aggressive, narcissistic, manipulative, or guilt tripping people). Her previous books (Positive Energy & Emotional Freedom Technique) are optional if you want to visit such subjects in detail.
This book is an investment in life 101 and is a fun book to study. I wish all of my (text)books were so alive, rich, and useful.
The book discusses both sides of the coin of surrender: surrendering those things that hold us back in life, such as letting go of fears and shortcomings, as well as surrendering to our true greatness -- surrender is examined in every useful sense of the term, and with breathtaking clarity.
Ironically, she returns often to the theme of finding abundance in life through the process of surrender. This is almost the opposite of the customary, negative definition that may initially come to mind: defeat, losing a fight, and surrendering something of value. Instead, Orloff focuses on the positive perspective of surrendering to win. Surrendering in this sense is an empowering experience that leads to a joyful, peaceful, responsible life. Surrender allows us to stop clenching, to let go of self-doubt, and to stop holding back from our potential for fulfillment and purpose.
The Ecstasy of Surrender deserves to be studied by every serious student of recovery from addiction. Freedom from all types of addiction -- including substances, behaviors, people, and material things -- requires letting go, namely, letting go of that which enslaves. Surrender is the beating heart of 12-Step Recovery. It is also central to other types of treatment, including Rational Recovery, which requires letting go of false beliefs (and no longer listening to the addictive voice).
Not only does recovery offer freedom from enslavement, it offers hope for a new way of life. This is a way of life in which one feels supported by the universe, not at odds with it. Life becomes a sacred celebration. This is what The Ecstasy of Surrender is all about. The book deserves recognition as a modern spiritual classic. Absolutely!
