Update: After two days of working with this on my Mac Mtn Lion laptops and on Windows 7 Pro laptop, the software has stopped working and I have decided to return it because of this plus it will not allow network signal sharing that the Utilities window offers. I will try instead the more expensive one with the share antenna. It does pull in the signal very well.
Update#2: This Chinese company should make it clear that the repeater kit only works with Windows, not Mac as I need. And so far I cannot make the internet sharing work on my Mac laptop Mtn Lion, though the driver specifically includes that OS. But I had to reset the model and Apple Extreme base station 600 feet away and then the Railink utility came up again. I will downloaded new drivers from the web site, [...] , for Mac and Win. also took out Bear Extender software on both OS's that seems to conflict, since both use Railink software. Hope it will work now.
Update#2: After downloading new drivers, this antenna works great, pulling a signal from 600 feet away. But it needs to plug into a USP port on a repeater booster transmitter and share the good signal. Or it needs an Ethernet cable instead of USB for use with any router for sharing the internet. And, the "internet sharing" option on the Railink software does not work on my Mac Air 2012 Mtn Lion OS; and tech help has not responded.
Final update #4: On April 20, 2013, after no success with Apple's tech help in sharing this USB antenna's internet access, I called Almond's WiFi repeater device with touchscreen tech number and a great tech guy Mr. Ashok Kumar got it working as a router from my MacBook Pro via ethernet cable into the Almond. Now I have full second home office WiFi just as in my other location 600 feet away; Apple TV works great. The Apple sharing preference is set to FROM 802.11N WLAN and the TO port choice is also ethernet. WiFi is turned off on main laptop. You just have to use the same password as your main base station and give the Almond a new name for clarity. Now the whole space has WiFi. Amazing technology.
Using Xirrus Wi-Fi Monitor software, I compared the signal strength of this Alfa AWUS036H with the 7dBi panel antenna to the High Power USB-Yagi Plug and Play directional WiFi Antenna 802.11n 2200mW / NextG USB-Yagi Plug & Play 11N Long Range WiFi antenna 2200mW . In nearly every test location, the Alfa rated 1 bar better and -10 RSSI (Receiving Signal Strength Indication) better (with RSSI signals negative numbers are better).
Although the 2200mW Yagi antenna is much larger and "twice the power", it pulls in a weaker signal and slower data transfer than the 1000mW Alfa 7dBi panel antenna.
Still this Alfa AWUS036H is the best performing wi-fi antenna on the market. My advice. Save yourself $60 and buy the Alfa AWUS036H Upgraded to 1000mW 1W 802.11b/g High Gain USB Wireless Long-Rang WiFi network Adapter with 5dBi Rubber Antenna and a 7dBi Panel Antenna - for Wardriving & Range Extension *Strongest on the Market* . I've tested all 3 Alfa antenna options and the 7dBi is clearly the best performing (better than 5dBi omni-directional and 9dBi omni-directional).
