About the Author
Sharon Watson is the author of WRITING FICTION [IN HIGH SCHOOL] and Apologia Educational Ministries' JUMP IN, a popular writing curriculum for middle school students. She began her writing life with snappy one-liners, notably, "I Hate Math!!!" gouged into the top of her fifth-grade math homework. In a junior high English class, she read The Scarlet Letter but could not figure out what Hester's "A" stood for. This has given her empathy for students stumbling through school and trying to make sense of their writing and literature classes, and she loves finding ways to make difficult writing tasks and concepts accessible to students. Sharon homeschooled her children for 18 years and teaches high school composition, fiction writing, and literature to local homeschool students and in all-day workshops. She and her husband live near Indianapolis, Indiana, and have three grown children and two grandchildren. Visit her website featuring FAQs for students and teachers, along with weekly writing prompts for high school and middle school students, at www.WritingWithSharonWatson.com. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

This book can be used in 2 years instead of one. Depending on your preferred schedule, you can pretty well do one chapter every week or two. We chose to read the chapters together, which usually only takes 30-45 min. After that my child works on the assignment for the rest of the week, or more, depending on what is assigned. If the teacher is faithful to grade and the student applies himself, he will be well prepared for the SAT and college after finishing this course.
I highly recommend purchasing the teacher key also. It will provide you with a grading format, and many sample papers. I need to be able to see where my child is in their writing and having other students work to compare to is what makes this book worthwhile to me. It has a wealth of teaching info in it also.
If you want to find writing to be a joy, not a drudgery, use this book in your high school curriculum. I think students and parents can easily relate to it and you might even have some great conversations with your child as well.
If your child dislikes writing as much as mine did, I would highly recommend trying The Power in Your Hands. You'll be glad you did!
Another great addition to this book, is it gives you writing prompts to use each month of the year. These are invaluable to your student in preparing them for real life. One writing prompt has the student pretend to be in an interview. Another has them tell a story without using the letter "t". I have several other students to teach, and I am not creative enough to come up with all this stuff. I'm so glad this book has done it for me. If we come to an especially busy month, instead of dropping writing during the chaos, my child can pull out a writing prompt and keep on learning.
Last but not least, this book provides you with the answers to the student book. By purchasing this book you will gain invaluable material to enhance and extend your students writing experience.
