I like the fact that it is two cycle as there is no valve adjustment and no oil changes required. As long as you run it dry before storing it, it should be reliable for years.
Having said that, if you want to run a sensitive load make sure to de-rate the running watts by half. This eases the amount of governor surge at inrush.
Need power for sensitive stuff? GO INVERTER GENERATOR!
Finally, the 12 vdc function is not good for charging batteries but is fine for 12 vdc below 8 amps roughly. You can get it to charge batteries but must tune the governor down quite a bit severely lowering voltage of the ac outlet.
As far as noise. Get creative with placement and blocking the sound and it can be ignored. For the newbs out there, probably can't fall asleep next to the thing or watch TV next to it. BRING AN EXTENSION CORD FOOLS so you can position it remotely enough where its noise is a non issue.
UPDATE: Still a solid runner after 2 years of sporadic use. You just cant beat the size and weight.
However, as with all 2-stroke engines it is fussy to start when cold. Furthermore, for the first year, I didnt realize that the spark plug connector (inside the rubber boot) is just sort of casually pressed to the wire. It almost always required me to remove the plug and spray starter fluid in the cylinder to get it to start, after which of course I would press the boot back down on the plug, re-connecting the wire temporarily (without realizing it). Then after about a year it just fell out and I saw what a cheap thing it is. I soldered it onto the wire and now it is just a case of pulling the rope and dorking with the choke til it starts.
Once it starts, it runs pretty well, but only powers about 650W worth of stuff before it starts to bog down too low to run stuff. And of course being a 2-stroke it has a very small flywheel so power surges are substantial. Dont run your defibrillator on this.
A 4-stroke would be more stable frequency-wise and not need mixing gas and thus start easier, but would weigh twice as much. If you need extreme portability, get this. If you dont, get a 4-stroke instead.
Would be perfect for camping, tailgates or any other odd job you need power for.
As far as quietness, I would say it is a little quieter than a weed-whacker and certainly more quiet than a lawnmower. Talking at a normal volume is possible as close as 10' and beyond. However, this thing is not what I would call quiet enough to run at night at a campground. Plan on bringing a battery if you need power at night.
Finally, take a little piece of advice and TIE A BIGGER KNOT IN THE STARTER ROPE BEFORE STARTING THE GENERATOR. The knot in the starter rope is too small for the hole in the handle. Pulling it apart will cause damage and much disappointment in the product. This is a tip I got from reading the reviews here in Amazon and I did it immediately upon receipt of the generator.
June 17, 2017 - UPDATE
This thing doesn't stop running. It is an amazing value. The only thing I've noticed is that we get a lot of dirty looks when running this thing all day at our campsite. It is more noisy than I initially thought. However, it runs and charges like a champ. I'll be looking for something quieter soon, but if quietness is not an issue, this is your generator.
