36 customers mention "Charge life"15 positive21 negative

Customers have mixed experiences with the battery's charge life, with some reporting acceptable performance in the first couple of charges and good performance in applications, while others mention that many units fail to charge at all or only last about 35-40 shots before needing replacement.

"Although they did have a higher voltage, they stopped taking a change pretty quickly...." Read more

"...new technology in a high current drain application and the batteries work very well...." Read more

"Only got these batteries to recharge twice, before they failed to take a charge, ie warning light on charger...." Read more

"recharges faster than others I've bought. I'm very happy with this product and my battery purchases have decreased, which saves plenty!" Read more

30 customers mention "Battery life"17 positive13 negative

Customers have mixed opinions about the battery life, with some finding them great while others report poor performance.

"First of all, they are great batteries so far. There is just one disappointing problem. The batteries are rated in mWh instead of the usual mAh...." Read more

I am really impressed with how long these last in low-use situations. I had forsaken rechargeables in my Wii board, because they would usually self-discharge in a week or two. But I popped in a set of four of these, and they last (at least) a month; I can't say how long, because I haven't needed to recharge them yet!

I don't know if they last so long because of a low self-discharge rate, or because they have slightly higher voltage than NiMH or NiCD, or some other factor, but they really do seem to maintain a healthy charge for a lot longer than other rechargables I've used in low-power, infrequent usage toys.

I'm definitely planning on more of these for other toys, like wireless game controllers.

These relative new NiZn batteries are very useful for rechargeable battery application when the common NiMH or NiCad battery can not be used because of their lower voltage of 1.23 Volt, compared to 1.5 Volt for regular alkaline batteries. In my application, computer mouse, the computer show "Low Battery" when it is 1.2 Volt (I measure the battery once the message appeared). In contrast, the NiZn battery initial voltage is 1.6 Volt, much closer to the alkaline battery. However, the NiZn batteries have less capacity than modern NiMH. This may be an issue heavy drain applications. For low drain, under several milli Amp and the need for 1.5 Volt these are good batteries. I have been using them in my none rechargeable mouse for nearly six months without any problems

Caution: 1. In some application such as certain cameras, the 1.6 Volt may be a problem. Possibly it may cause damage and/or light sensing error and wrong exposure. Use caution and check before use. Better safe than sorry. 2. To the best of my knowledge, these batteries are made by only one company, PowerGenix in San Diego, California. The other brand names are just rebranded PowerGenix. There are rumors that the company my not continue with the product. Therefore, if you use these batteries, be ready to switch back if they are no longer available. 3. Typically batteries are specified with mAh (milli Amp hours). Since these batteries have lower mAh compared to NiMH, the company specifies them with mWh (milli Watt hour) which `looks better'. Watch out for this little confusing factor. The two definitions, mAh and mWh are not the same.

The only reasons for not giving thes ebatteries a higher ratings are the cautions above.

I have a relatively new F100027-00 model PowerGenix charger and 4 new batteries, threw out 4 previous dead NiZn batteries and their charger after less than a year. The new charger helped with the old batteries but I'm starting to get the same problem with the new batteries...i.e., reduced usage time and one of a pair of batteries tested DEAD in my Apple Magic mouse (removed and tested using pulse-load battery tester). Put in the second pair and put the two in the charger (can't charge just one) and the charger went to work and in 20 minutes lights went out, both batteries tested 100%.

I'm happier with rechargeables than primary batteries due to cost, but the rechargeables certainly don't last anywhere near as long as the primary batteries, sometimes only a couple days. Yes, the Magic Mouse is a battery sucker, but NiZn and their associated chargers probably aren't the long-term answer.

I have camera that *requires* 3.0 volts from the 2 AA batteries it houses. Other rechargeable batteries are only 1.2 volts for a total of 2.4 volts from 2 AA batteries and they simply won't power up my camera. So when I saw these advertised 1.6 volt rechargeable NiZN batteries I grabbed 12 of them, thinking my problem was solved. Uh, no... not hardly.

    1) They *never* actually deliver 1.6 volts (!). Fully-charged they deliver 1.8 volts (yikes!) By the time you've used (drained) enough energy out of them to read 1.6 volts, they have no effective capacity left in them to run much more than a 3-LED flashlight. Any device requiring more "oomph" (techincally called 'milliAmp capacity') simply will not run when a NiZN battery is drained down to where it reads 1.6v -- so all these things really do is dangerously over-power a device because 1.8 volts times 2 AA batteries is 3.6 volts! Way more than my camera and most battery-powered devices are designed to handle.

    2) PowerGenix has serious quality control problems at the manufacturing plant. These batteries are supposed to have at least 1500 milliAmps of stored current capacity when fully charged. But when fully-charged. 4 of my 12 NiZN batteries read 1000 to 1200 milliAmps... 4 others read just 800 - 900 milliAmps... and 4 of them only read 400 - 700 milliAmps when fully charged! NONE them were anywhere close to the 1500 milliAmps of stored energy they are supposed to carry.

Basically, when you look at the over current of 1.8 to 1.7 volts they pump out, combined with their terrible storage capacity (they run down fast), these things are pretty much useless. It's a shame because if you research the nickel-zinc (NiZN) technology it is *very* promising. It's a damn shame PowerGenix brought these terrible batteries to market before they got the tech working right.

I really wanted these to be all they are advertised, but sadly they are not. Take a pass on 'em until you hear that they've come up with a true 1.5 - 1.6 volt rechargeable that actually does store at least 1500 milliAmps.
