"Powerhouse" combines old blues and ragtime jazz with new blues, a little country, and a cowboy song. I learned "Chicken Shack" from the work of New Orleans blues artist Champion Jack Dupree (1909-1992). "I'm a Stranger Here" is my rendition of a traditional song. I learned "Fight Like That" from recordings by Ben Curry, also known as Blind Bogus Ben Covington, who recorded from 1928-32 and is said to have died in 1935. "I'm Going Upstairs" is a John Lee Hooker song.

"Silver Jack," which I learned from the Lomax collection, is a cowboy song about a campfire dispute about religion. "The Lonely One In This Town" is my adaptation of a song by the Mississippi Sheiks. "Farmer Is the Man" is a traditional song with origins in the Populist movement of the 1890s. "The Way I Like to Do" is a six-minute original blues tune with slide guitar riffs. "Cotton Mill Frolic" is my version of an American industrial ballad first recorded by Joe Sharp, an Alabama cotton farmer, in 1939.
