With an extra large, two-piece cast-iron table and balanced nine-spoke cast-iron wheel, the Powermatic PWBS-14CS 14-Inch Woodworking Band Saw is a capable, user-friendly machine ideal for professional woodworkers and hobbyists. Its rugged design offers uncompromising accuracy and durability; while a host of innovative features let users tackle a range of heavy-duty jobs with precision and control.Solid, Sturdy Backbone for Vibration-Free Operation
A huge iron casting provides a solid foundation that keeps the PWBS-14CS rigid and vibration free. The heavy-gauge, steel base cabinet adds to the unit's overall stability and provides a solid,vibration-absorbing base for the motor. Because dust collection does not pass through the base cabinet, its interior remains virtually dust free, reducing routine maintenance while enhancing the long life of the motor and drive belt.
To help improve visibility and the air quality of your shop, the PWBS-14CS features a four-inch diameterport cast into the lower housing, directly below the blade, for effective dust evacuation. And tokeep the cut line clearly visible, an integral air pump supplies pressurized air to an adjustable nozzleattached to the upper blade guide, resulting in a chip blower that provides a clear line.
Extra-Large Work Table
To effectively handle projects both big and small, the PWBS-14CS features an extra-large,two piece cast iron table with a tilting section measuring 15.0 x 15.0 inches and a fixedextension measuring 15.0 x 5.0 inches for a total working surface area of 15.0 x 20.0 inches.
Optimum Power and Drive
The PWBS-14CS is powered by a one and one-half-horsepower TEFC (totally enclosed fan cooled)industrial-style motor that comes wired for 115-volt operation, but can be converted to 230 volts. The motor power is delivered through a set of precision-machined multi-groove pulleys that aredriven by a poly-V drive belt system, known for its smooth, efficient transmission of power withvery little temperature buildup.
For their part, the cast-iron drive wheels are fully machined, painted, and fitted with high quality tires and then dynamically balanced to ensure smooth operation.
With the PWBS-14CS, adjustments are never a problem, due to the blade width markings on thetensioning block for blade widths from one-eighth- to three-quarter-inch. The infiniteadjusting system also lets users dial in the correct tension for specialty blades that mayrequire non-standard tension settings.
This model comes with the legendary, Carter quick-release handle assembly that features three positions:full tension, relaxed tension, and full release. Users can move the Carter between all three positionswithout losing the tension setting, potentially lengthening the life of the blade.
The PWBS-14CS also includes an exclusive design, quick-release, precision T-square-style rip fence withfour-inch re-saw attachment; 60-watt adjustable lamp (bulb not included) built into the body to providedirect light on blade and work piece while cutting; and a full six-inch under-guide capacity with 13-1/2-inch width capacity.

As an aside, if you are in a hot climate, be careful as the plastic parts such as bandsaw tires, and plastic pads will lose shape and adhesive will slip if the temp is over the 90ish mark. So if you live in the United States, or South America, or most of Europe, or most of Asia, or Australia, ... Perfect saw for Antarctica or the North Pole. What a great marketing idea!
One email to Powermatic got a new base shipped the same day. When it arrived my neighbors all seemed to be out. With the saw body still in the box, I laid the base on its side, slid the saw to the base, bolted it up and pivoted the saw into the upright position. Following the instruction step by step (had to think about a few of the steps) the saw was up and running.
After cutting a few scraps I cut the feet for a trestle table. The wood was 8/4 cherry and I must say that the cuts in both the straight and curved sections were very clean with no burning. A few minutes at the spindle sander and I was good to go.
While I'm still waiting for a selection of TimberWolf blades to arrive I just couldn't wait to try a little resawing. I cut several 1/4" thick pieces from an 8/4 x 5 1/2" x 20" piece of cherry. I had to go slow and back off occasionally to allow the gullets to clear (this is not a resaw blade) the results were usable after a bit of sanding. The small, plastic, resaw post while cheap looking, did the job.
Fit and finish are at least as good as the other major manufacturers. The optional mobile base makes it easy to push this out of the way in my garage/workshop when I'm not using it.
The PWBS- 14 is very quiet and has no vibration to speak of. I have read where people have been experiencing alignment difficulties with the use of the riser block. This matter must have been corrected as mine went together without a hitch. I know it will serve me proud for years to come. Powermatic hit a home run with this machine!!!
First off, I had to help the driver get it off the truck which didn't have a lift gate. He said that that wasn't included in the shipping charge, but I checked afterwards and it was supposed to be included. It's a good thing I had a sturdy hand truck, so I got it into the garage without a problem. On the plus side, the driver let me keep the pallet and I got some decent usable stock from it. Shipping was faster than I expected, so there's another plus -- although I wasn't in a big hurry to recieve the saw.
I didn't track it but assembly and setup took me the better part of a full day. All the parts were there. The instructions could be a whole lot better -- especially with parts identification. All in all, it wasn't overly difficult to assemble.
Alignment and setup were another matter. I'm still not sure I've got it all aligned 100% properly. But this being my first band saw, I figure I have a learning curve so I won't complain bitterly about it. In particular, the extension table seem to be unnecessarily complex and poorly documented. I still don't have it anywhere near good alignment with the main table.
The flexible light is a good idea but doesn't seem long enough or flexible enough to cast light where I really need it.
After assembly and alignment, I made my first cut and was very dissapointed. Then, I watched The Wood Whisperer's excellent video on band saw tune up, went back to the manual, got things set up a lot closer to where they should be, and now am anything but disappointed.
This is a quality tool that takes some know-how to use properly. Do I love everything about it to 100% ecstacy? No. But ultimately I'm a very happy buyer and would recommend this tool without reservation. In the interest of "full disclosure" I should mention that I bought this on Amazon on sale for $800, and might not give it 5 stars if I'd paid the close to $1200 list price.
