Developed by an award-winning manufacturer, the Powermonkey Extreme Portable Solar Charger will charge both 5V and 12V electronic devices, offering users real power in a compact, durable shell.
9000mAh Lithium Polymer Battery
The Powermonkey Extreme houses a massive 9000mAh lithium polymer battery and is capable of recharging an iPhone/smartphone up to 6 times, an iPad/Tablet up to 2 times or charging most SLR camera batteries twice. It will work with virtually any 5V or 12V devices including head lamps, handheld action cameras and more.
The included solar panel will charge the Powermonkey Extreme battery unit in 18-22 hours in optimum light conditions and is also capable of charging 5V devices directly. The solar panel’s folding, clam-shell design takes up little space and it can be attached to backpacks, tents, etc via the included Velcro strap.
5V USB and 12V DC Output Sockets
The Powermonkey Extreme has two output ports – a 5V USB socket and a 12V DC socket. From the 5V USB socket you can charge your smaller devices such as smartphones, iPods, GPS, head lamps, etc., whilst the 12V DC socket can be used to charge SLR camera batteries (when used in conjunction with the included female in-car socket), portable DVD players and much more. You can even charge 5V and 12V devices simultaneously thus saving time.
Working Out Your Device's Charge
If your device is charged via a USB socket, the maximum voltage of your device will be 5 Volts. For other products, the voltage your device requires can be found either in the user manual supplied with the device or on the AC mains charger.
The Powermonkey Extreme is compatible with virtually any 5V electronic device such as smartphones, iPods, GPS, handheld action video cameras (e.g. GoPro), Sat Navs, headlamps, e-readers and more, as well as devices requiring 12V to charge such as SLR cameras, heavy duty torches, two-way radios, etc. Please note, to charge Apple devices you will require your white sync/charge USB cable supplied with your Apple product – this can then be directly plugged into the battery unit via USB.
Perfect for Outdoor Use
The Powermonkey Extreme has an IP67 rating meaning it is waterproof for 30 minutes up to 1 meter and its shock-resistant design can take the knocks and spills of any expedition. The included Velcro strap attaches the solar panel to backpacks and tents, allowing the powermonkey battery unit to be charged throughout the day. The friction swipe on/off switch can be used whilst wearing gloves, perfect if you’re outdoors.
Lightweight and Compact Design
The Powermonkey Extreme (battery unit and solar panel combined) weighs just 1 lb and everything fits into the included travel case which measures just 7 x 4 x 2.2 inches. When the solar panel is folded it measures 6.7 x 3.6 x 0.7 inches and the battery unit just 6 x 2.4 x 1.10 inches - perfect for even the most space-conscious traveller.
Who’s It Suitable For?
If you spend time off the beaten track or on the move but can’t live without your smartphone, tablet, GPS or other 5V or 12V electronic device, the Powermonkey Extreme is an essential item for your bag. Weekend camper, jet-setter, adventure traveller or just gadget-junkie, the powermonkey extreme gives your devices the power to keep on going.

What a great package this is! It comes with plugs for all over the world and then it comes with the small plugs to be able to plug in almost anything to charge. We went through all of our electronics and there is a tip for each one. This will be SO great this summer when we live on our sailboat where power is at a premium. This charger is mine and now I won't have to worry about draining the "house" battery for my iPad. I'll have access to my OWN power! GREAT!!! It comes in a case that will hold everything and keep it safe since it's a hard-sided case. No question, this was exactly what I was looking for!
Editing in Aufust, 2012 - we are now heading home after being away on the sailboat for over two weeks. I can now say that this solar charger will be a staple on our trips. When it was daylight and not raining, I kept the charger out in the sun and never wanted for power, even on cloudy days.Read more ›
I just took it on a 10 day canoe trip and it charged my iPad once and my iPod twice and also charged the iPod of someone else in our group twice on a single charge. The battery pack still had enough juice to charge my iPad again if needed. I did not have to even pull the solar panels out to recharge the battery pack which was a good thing as we only had two days of sun in the 10 day trip.
Great power source!
-Built tough; very robust housing, solid feel. You get the impression that this thing is meant to be taken on safaris or sea voyages.
-Simple user controls
-TONS of adapters, both for devices and charging the unit; they included a charger plug for the US, the UK, and continental Europe, and the device adaptors for pretty much every device ever made, including plain old USB.
-Takes every bit of 15 hours to charge fully; don't think you are going to plug in for 30 minutes at the airport and charge up for your flight. If you don't leave home with a full charge, you will forever be playing catch-up.
-I have not attempted to use the solar panel, I imagine it would be VERY slow.
-At $179, you're paying an awful lot per unit of charging time
-Start with fully charged devices and a fully charged powermonkey, and kill the powermonkey first.
Would I buy it again? Probably not, but only because I did not realized it would take 15 hours to charge, and also because there are other less expensive options that would have been adequate for my needs.

This thing is awful. Too many cords and the quality is slipshod. The cord from the solar panel to the power pack will certainly breakPublished 2 months ago by plastikarma
Out of the box, it took a charge. The touch panel used to turn the device on/off was a little wonky, but it worked at least once you realized you had to give it a bit of a press. Read morePublished 7 months ago by Rogue Shoten
