Modern astrology makes my head spin with how many ways that everyone is right because of this or that. If a modern astrologer makes a wrong guess then they have 15 things to justify why if didn't work out. If they say, "Oh you MUST be a Leo' and you say "no", they ramble off 37 possible reasons why they were wrong but that justify their statement.

For this reason alone I was looking for a good book on Traditional, or Horay Astrology and I was hoping that this would be a good place to start. While it's a good book on It, it assumes that you already know Modern Astrology and that you are wanting to graft this onto it. I found Real Astrology a MUCH better introduction to old world astrology.

I am in the process of reading this book, which I was led to by the reader's comment on the review above. That comment is spot on. The study of traditional astrology is a nascent one, and learning to work with it IS difficult. But not impossible. Crane's book requires slow reading, note-taking, and thinking. However, it is immensely worth the work. As of now, there seems to be no work on traditional astrology which takes you by the hand. The modern books on traditional astrology are just being born out of the recent spate of translations and reissues of ancient, medieval, and renaissance astrological works. In other words, the secondary sources are just beginning to appear. Crane, Tobin, Dykes, and Lehman are the current leaders (in my opinion) of the secondary movement. There is, as yet, for Traditional Astrology--no one book equivalent to Margaret Hone's Textbook of Modern Astrology. At this point, the seeker after traditional methods must digest the works from the four authors above, and extract a method. Crane's book will be very helpful in this regard. Perhaps the best take-away from all these books is that the learning of traditional astrology will occur most quickly if we do not first approach a chart in its entirety, but rather go through a list of universal major human concerns one at a time: career/work, health, relationships, finances, and so on. This approach corrals the complexities of traditional astrology into a manageable form.
