This is the first "Practice Makes Perfect" book that I disliked. I have the Spanish Volcabulary edition, by a different author, and it is far better than its French counterpart. So much is missing in this book. There are a lot of matching exercises, nothing much with translation or grammar. I hope the author takes a lesson from the Spanish Vocabulary authors and includes a lot more in the next edition of this book. Sorry, but you'll have to skip this one!

I purchased this book believing it to be for intermediate-level students of French, but most of what this book teaches I learned in my freshman year of high school French; it is definitely geared toward first- and second-year beginners. And while I have found it somewhat useful for basic review and have learned a dozen new words, the book does not contain nearly enough practice exercises. The ones it does contain are generally matching and fill-in-the-blank, and I don't believe these types of exercises help language students remember what they've learned.

I liked the vocabulary included, but the exercises were insufficient. I wouldn't have minded a somewhat larger book if she included more exercises because we don't know as much French as the author, and we need to see the words in context, the work needs to be more communicative. Matching exercises are not sufficient. I've learned a few words, but I wasn't very motivated to use this book, but I will go through it more because it has some useful vocabulary that I've used.

I can't break it down completely but there are a lot of good and bad things about the books. 1st good thing: I learned a lot from this book even though I'm about very low B1 level. The book is mainly for beginners giving you a large amount of lists on different topics (people, food, society, etc.). I personally had no problems with these lists or lack of exercises because I normally write essays based on the vocabulary which helps me a lot with memorizing. The exercises never helped memorize and neither do Flashcards, but that's specifically me. 1st bad thing: this book, along with most of the other books, really needs an audio cd. it would be nice to have a full understanding of how to correctly pronounce the words; also, maybe some passages with dialogue would help. ^-^ 2nd good thing: the organization of the book is beautiful. It's amazing for people who already know vocabulary of a certain topic. You can pick and choose the topics you want to learn about which I like from this book. 2nd bad thing: just not enough vocabulary. The book, again, is mainly for beginners. It doesn't cover enough vocabulary in my opinion. The Spanish vocabulary book goes really in depth with vocabulary in my opinion. this book I feel gives you random vocabulary from different topics. I saw words that people might use everyday be left out, but it does add a lot of words you wouldn't expect to see. Overall the book is good, and it's easy to use. It's a great supplement for an ap French class.

I think this is an excellent choice if you are a complete beginner. Together with the Kindle French dictionary I acquired also, It has been easy for me to learn many words and expressions.

I have purchased many versions of these books in several different languages for my high school children to learn languages. They really like the workbook style of book. The instructions are all in English, so it is easy for them to understand what they need to do. It consists of filling in the blank type problems and choosing the correct answer from a list. The answers to the problems are at the end of the book, so they can determine if they got the answer right or wrong. I feel that these books have helped them greatly and I would recommend to others.

This isn't bad book, but it also isn't very good. On the positive side, there is a fair bit of vocabulary on a variety of topics. However, the exercises are very limited and cover only a fraction of the vocabulary. I wouldn't recommend buying this book.
