The book's point of view can be a little confusing. It's not entirely written by Brother Lawrence. Portions based on conversations with Brother Lawrence were authored by the superior of Brother Lawrence's monastery. Other portions seem to be written or at least dictated by Brother Lawrence. But get past the pastiche of points of view, and you're left with a little classic on how to live in the presence of God.
Brother Lawrence was offered the position of abbot in his monastery, but rejected it to remain in the monastery kitchen because of his experience of the presence of God in his work there.
Really, if you struggle to know God's loving presence in your life, you'll find this book tremendously helpful.
