I can tell the author had tried hard to cover Scala and enterprise application in a rather detailed manner, walking through the code and making sure it all works, etc. But overall it failed to convey the key concepts and their usefulness to the reader. One could easily lose track and come to the conclusion that there's nothing new or exciting about Scala for the enterprise, which is of cause far from the truth.
