An illuminating, insider’s journey through the world of
Little House on the Prairie and beyond, from Dean Butler, who starred as Almanzo Wilder, the man Laura “Half Pint” Ingalls married—on the iconic show still beloved by millions of fans as it reaches its 50th anniversary.

With a foreword from Melissa Gilbert (Laura) and Alison Arngrim (Nellie)!

Cast just before his twenty-third birthday, Dean Butler joined
Little House on the Prairie halfway through its run, gaining instant celebrity and fans’ enduring affection. Ironically, when the late, great Michael Landon remarked that Little House would outlive everyone involved in making it, Butler deemed it unlikely. Yet for four decades and counting, Butler has been defined in the public eye as Almanzo Wilder—a role he views as the great gift of his life.

Butler had been cast as a romantic lead before, notably in the made-for-TV movie of Judy Blume’s
Forever, opposite Stephanie Zimbalist. But Little House was, and remains, one of the most treasured shows in television history. As the eventual husband of Laura “Half-pint” Ingalls—and the man who would share actress Melissa Gilbert’s first real-life romantic kiss—Butler landed as a central figure for the show’s devoted fans.

Now, with wit and candor, Butler recounts his passage through the
Prairie, sharing stories and anecdotes of the remarkable cast who were his on-screen family. But that was merely the beginning of a diverse career that includes Broadway runs and roles on two other classic shows—Moondoggie in The New Gidget and Buffy’s ne’er-do-well father, Hank, in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Coming of age during a golden era of entertainment, Butler has evolved along with it, and today enjoys success and fulfillment as a director and producer—notably of NBC Golf’s Feherty—while remaining deeply loyal to Little House.

The warmth, heart, and decency that fans of Laura and Almanzo fell in love with on
Little House echo through this uplifting memoir, a story, in Butler’s words, about “good luck, good television, and the very good—if gloriously imperfect—people who made it so.”

Editorial Reviews

Review

Praise for Prairie Man by Dean Butler:

“I've had the privilege of knowing Dean Butler from the perspective of a television viewer, business colleague, and friend. This story could only have been written by Dean. It's a clear understanding of life in front of and as an executive behind the camera. If you love
Little House on the Prairie and you want to understand the business of entertainment, sports, and more importantly, living a full life, with his wife Katherine, Dean's book is one you will enjoy.” —Kathy Ireland

“Dean Butler has a unique perspective of the
Little House experience. His stories have wit and wisdom, and his career takes us beyond Little House as he provides even more Hollywood insights.” —Mary McDonough, actress (The Waltons) and author of Lessons from the Mountain

"A ‘must read’ for fans of
Little House on the Prairie, as well as an engaging and insightful show-business chronicle made richer by Dean's love of history and his ongoing desire to tell powerful stories. This memoir is not only a surprisingly candid and affectionate view of the iconic television series, including Dean Butler's complex relationship with Michael Landon, but also a challenging, improvisational journey of a young leading man evolving into a successful Producer/Writer/Director.” —Lucy Lee Flippin, actress (Little House on the Prairie)

“Warm. Authentic. Utterly charming and endlessly captivating and entertaining. A deeply personal and beautifully written chronicle from the heart of a life well lived.  I worked with Dean after his defining time with Michael Landon. It would’ve been easy, given
Little House’s status as one of the most enduring series in the history of television, to paint it all with a broad brush of perfection, but Dean goes beyond the mythology to share his personal experience with both awe and understanding. To so many he remains Almanzo Wilder,  but to me...he will always be my “Moondoggie".”Caryn Richman, actress, The New Gidget

I, like most kids of the 70's, grew up watching and loving Little House on the Prairie. This book was a great read about the actor who portrayed Manly 😊

I did, however, discover a mistake on page 150. He writes about " All the Dear Children" LHOTP movie and notes they adopted the young boy, Samuel. I watch this every Christmas and remember the couple that had Rose wound up adopting Samuel at the very end.

Yup, I'm a Little House dork that remembers these details. Mr. Butler is very open and forthcoming and I highly recommended this fantastic book.

Dean Butler's memoir was an enjoyable and easy read. In many ways the author seems like his character Almanzo, good values and always trying to do the right thing. It's great fun reading about his life. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is that I would've liked to hear more about the other actors on Little House namely Richard Bull, Dabbs Greer, Kevin Hagen, Karl Swenson, Charlotte Stewart and Victor French. Also while the picture section is lovely I would have liked to see more images from the Little House set. But really not a big deal. I would recommend this book to any fan of the Little House TV show or Laura Ingalls Wilder's books!

I had this in my cart for awhile. I was and am a huge LHOP fan and was very excited to see that Dean Butler had written a book. I always really liked his character in the series. His memoir is enjoyable to read- he seems very down to earth and similar to his character, Almanzo. He knows what the reader wants. There is a passage where he writes something like "come on and get to the Little House part" while explaining his past. I love that he is married to Katherine Cannon who played Donna Martins mom (90210) so brilliantly. I really enjoyed this book and highly recommend it for a quick and enjoyable read.

Loved learning about Dean’s life and all the forces that impacted his personal and acting worlds. He speaks vulnerably about how he was treated as a child and later, an actor in a hugely loved show—- making this memoir multidimensional and charming. A good read and great coming of age portrayal of a time in Hollywood that no longer exists.

There is so much I loved about this book. Dean Butler shares his life experiences about his life and career. He does so honestly and respectfully. He takes “No victims” so if you’re looking for him to trash talk someone, he doesn’t. He focuses on his experiences, not so much on others.
I also appreciate that there is no bad language, I think he just doesn’t talk that way.
There isn’t anything I don’t like about this book.

It's no secret I'm a huge Little House fan...I spent my childhood and on into the present devouring all the episodes. I fibbed to my mom when I was a little girl when she caught me crying. I was just old enough (at maybe 4?) to know that it was embarrassing to cry over a tv show, but I couldn't help it. Almanzo and Laura's dating and marriage years were some of the best memories of the show, so I leapt at the chance to read this memoir!
Dean Butler does not disappoint. Fortunately he gives credit to Little House for propelling his career into stardom. He will forever be recognized and beloved for his work on the show. I did not know (or remember) many of the details he shares about later acting jobs but it was enjoyable to learn and hear him read his own words. I recommend this to Little House fans but also to those curious of a Hollywood actor still contributing as LH turns 50!
