About the Author
Peggy Jane Gunn was born on a rented farm near Flomot, Texas, one of five siblings to survive the Great Depression, to graduate from Flomot High School and to return every three years for the town's homecoming celebration. Married for 52 years to Leon McCracken, the author wrote about their two children, five grandchildren, and three great-grands. When not writing or keeping books for the Enterprise, Peggy enjoyed church work, playing the piano, and gardening. Peggy Gunn McCracken entered the world of journalism in 1972 for what she thought was a brief training period for her writing career. Thirty five-plus years later, she sat at the same desk assigned to her as a cub reporter to assemble and lay out a book of columns she wrote for the Pecos (Texas) Enterprise newspaper through those years. She chose columns about her childhood in Flomot, Texas and her life beyond in her first two books because they drew more interest in readers than any other subject she covered. When she received the diagnosis of cancer she kept sharing her life, documenting the experience of living under a final deadline. She worked on those columns and this book to the end.
