After her release from the hospital, Lou moves in with Steph, her dearest and closest friend. Steph is instrumental in helping Lou get back on her feet by helping her land a lucrative position at a prominent financial firm. As her bones and mind heal from her recent ordeals, Lou focuses on her new career. She impresses her peers and gains the respect of the firm’s executive officers. She also catches the attention of Alex, the CEO’s son.
Alex is the black sheep of the family who bucks convention by not embracing his lot in life, which entails following in his father’s footsteps to one day run the firm. He’s still hurting from the loss of his true love and resolves to live his life on his terms, not the ones dear old Dad expects him to honor. Alex is enraptured with Lou the moment he lays eyes on her, and becomes even more infatuated when she won’t give him the time of day. He’s not used to being shunned by women, and views her rebuttal as a challenge to show her he’s not the playboy she’s pegged him to be.
Just as things on both a professional and personal level seem to be on an upswing for Lou, someone from her past unexpectedly surfaces with a grave warning. Everything and everyone she holds dear could be destroyed if she doesn’t return to the home she used to share with Matt. In a selfless and sacrificial move, Lou places herself in Matt’s cruel and careless clutch.
Although they haven’t known each other long, Lou has stolen Alex’s heart. He misses her terribly after she leaves without a goodbye, and valiantly tries to track her down in the hope of convincing her to come back to him. Alex asks for his father’s help, which arrives in the form of private investigators. The discovery of Lou’s location coincides with the realization that the Feds are about to bring Matt down on a set of serious charges related to arms dealing, drug peddling, and prostitution. Alex insists on accompanying the extraction team in order to be there when Lou is finally liberated. But when things don’t go as planned, their reunion isn’t the happy one Alex anticipated.
This is a heart-pounding, dramatic story of the triumph of the human spirit over evil and oppression. It contains some disturbing scenes depicting elements of abuse and bondage. While these are not pleasant situations, they are integral to the storyline and are not glorified or drawn out any longer than necessary. Scenes that focus on Lou’s healing and hard work to overcome her horrible past are much more numerous and uplifting. I found myself rooting for her and smiling when she did well at work or let loose and had the kind of fun a young woman her age should experience. The ending left me wide-eyed and gasping in shock, and I can’t wait to see what happens next in this harrowing story.
That being said, the book quickly sucks the reader into Louise's world and becomes very impossible to put down. Readers will feel a kinship with Louise and Alex. While this is C. Renee's first novel, it seems like it comes from a more experienced author. The editing of the book is excellent which often gets missed in authors early works.
The story does have to be read before The Precious Topaz. I would highly recommend others read C. Renee's debut novel.
The Precious Ruby is sorta like your typical rich boy meets average girl romance but this has a little of a twist to it and that's what captured me in the end with this book. The plot was done creatively and definitely held my attention through out the book. I fell in love with Louise's character because she is a strong willed woman who shows strength in numbers throughout this story. Her past has brought nothing but heartache to her life and now that she has found a happy future it comes back with a vengeance only to try to ruin what she has built. Alex and Louise both are tested throughout and the strength Louise has with the protectiveness Alex portrays will have your heart stopping at this love story with a twist.
Alex has a love for helping others so he works as a paramedic on the side with his best friend and it's not until an accident involving Louise that Alex notices her for the first time and simply can't stay away. The pull they have right from the start has Alex's heart stopping in his chest every time he is around her. They find themselves meeting once again on later and Alex decides right then he wants something with her. He just never knew how much her past could haunt their new lives they work so hard to build with each other. But this doesn't stop neither one of them but it's only the beginning of the trials and tests they both will face.
I can't wait to read part two "The Precious Topaz." The Precious Ruby is highly recommended to all readers who love a steamy romance with a suspense twist. Will definitely keep you asking "What's next?? " But there are a few surprises that C Renee writes that you definitely don't see coming.
