It was made and released in Australia, and never was in theaters in the US, so that's why I didn't hear about it until recently. I was reading an online list of thought-provoking movies, and it was on the list. And it is indeed thought provoking.
It's based on a Robert Heinlein story that I read long, long ago called All You Zombies. That story was actually one of the earliest time travel stories that follows time loops as part of the plot. That's old hat now, of course (see Time Traveler's Wife, for example), but it's still very well done in this movie.
Ethan Hawk is good, but I have to say that Sarah Snook is just outstanding. This would have been Academy Award material if the movie was mainstream in the US.
Watch it when you are ready to see something deep and detailed. If you are a Robert Heinlein fan, look for the homage to him (his books lying around for example).

An absolute must for any sci-Fi fans, time travel enthusiasts and anybody who likes their brain and minds challenged! Great price too. Delivered on time, no damage, perfectly new. The DVD would make a nice affordable gift to people interested in this genre too.
Ethan Hawke gives a quietly solid performance, in which his dilemma becomes painfully apparent as the plot unfurls. Many of the twists are guessable - or indeed transparent - but even so there were a couple of moments of revelation which we hadn't seen coming. The directors obviously felt it was necessary to give everyone a recap near the end, just to clarify things. So don't worry if you do get confused...
Ideal if you enjoyed all those time-paradox episodes of Star Trek, or the ever-evolving multiverse of Fringe.
It's very well directed, intense & absorbing. Ethan Hawke has never yet become the big star that he once threatened to be, but he puts in an excellent performance here. He is matched by Sarah Snook & Noah Taylor. It's consistently gritty, grimy, and atmospheric. But the plot is just too convoluted & circular. I can't say any more than that for fear of spoiling your enjoyment. Time travel, the core of the film, has always been a very difficult subject for authors & film-makers alike. Few handle it really well, some do a decent job of it. Predestination does a decent job of it. But not quite 5* for me...
Time jumping is a part of the progression to a reveal all conclusion. Thankfully spfx don't get in the way of this. Very well done.
Great production, script, acting, concept.
5 stars. Now in my top 10 films.
