Editorial Reviews

Cold Specks is 24-year-old Canadian artist Al Spx.
Listen to I Predict A Graceful Expulsion, the debut album from
Cold Specks, and you re transported to the Deep South, to the
Ozarks and Appalachians, to the stirring songs of chain gangs,
and to Harlem at the very point where blues met soul. Describing
her sound as Doom Soul, Cold Specks music is the sound of
struggle and strife brought up to date, packing all the power and
potency of a voice that seems to stop time.

I have been waiting for this CD since first seeing her on Britain's Jools Holland music show and then checking her out live in a small pub in Bristol England. Cold Specks is a really gifted young artist whose influences obviously come from gospel, folk, soul, and blues, pooling them all together to create an acoustic based sound that is firmly rooted in the 21st Century. I hesitate to compare her with anyone because she has a unique voice, but those that enjoy Joan Armatrading and Tracy Chapman will love this CD. However I must point out that when I saw her in Bristol most of the audiences were under 25 and judging by their positive reaction to her see her she as someone that appeals to all ages. Credit must go to her musicians who are also young, creative and totally in tune with Cold Specks style. If I had to pick stand out tracks I would pick `Holland' and `Lay Me Down' but the truth is that for me the songs on this CD just flow into each other and creates a mellow mood. This is a really good first CD and I hope she enjoys the success that someone with her talent deserves.

Al Spx's vocals are as sweet as honey on her debut album, I Predict a Graceful Expulsion. Hailing from Ontario, the young singer is known to be shy and soft spoken, but her rich and powerful voice makes it clear that she has something to say. Her songs have a serene, nostalgic mood and express a sense of weariness and disillusion. Evocative of gospel, blues and jazz, each song's instrumentation blends beautifully with Spx's voice. The second track, "Hector," couples restrained, steady percussion with Spx's breathy, mournful crooning, resulting in a tune that is ethereal and haunting. The next track, "When the City Lights Dim," is similarly somber, but also strangely optimistic, repeating "My oh my, don't you know my will is good?" Her lyrics are beautifully simple and poetic, with a sense of inner strength that makes you want to belt it out along with her. The last track, "The Mark," is another powerful, slow tune that ends the album on a sorrowful note with a slow repetition of "Take my body home, take my body home." Though it consists of a mere six songs, I Predict a Graceful Expulsion is elegant and moving, a true work of art.

A very interesting first CD. Lyrics are thought provoking and varied. Melodies are somewhat unimaginative with many songs sounding the same. Overall a very good introduction to a new group/artist with great potential. I personally find "Lay Me Down" to be particularly hauntingly beautiful. One to listen to on repeat at times. 5 stars given for a first effort and potential.

I was not familar with Cold Specks until I downloaded a free song compliments of Starbucks. After listening to the song, "When the City Lights Dim", I was hooked on the music. After researching the artist on Amazon, I knew I wanted more Cold Specks music in my library, not just one song.

I first heard Cold Specks on the radio. I found her voice compelling, and searched out this CD. It has now been on continuous rotation in my stereo, and each time I hear it I find myself being drawn deeper and deeper into the music. Make no mistake, this is a MAJOR new talent. This is the voice Adele wishes she had. I hope Cold Specks is around for a long time.

I heard this artist interviewed on public radio and was intrigued by her story. I liked the piece she performed so decided to try the whole album. Very nice! Music that sounds good and also has something to say.

I thought Graceful Expulsion was fantastic. There wasn't a cover song on the album. I am sure that Al Stx wrote them all. They are wonderful. Even the liner notes, the lyrics were written as I think she wrote them. With lines crossed out and words changed, sort of like her first run as she wrote on a napkin. Either that or she had one damn good Art Director. Her voice was mesmerizing, almost hypnotic. Man, soul was spilling out all over the place, what a talent! I have listened to it about 12 times ( by myself and with friends) since I got it. It's too much. I need to put it away for awhile.

I discovered the soulful vocals of Al Spx and her band Cold Specks in a small club in Montreal during a tour of her homeland. Her debut album is blowing up the year end best of 2012 lists. Part soul, part folk, part gospel ... and all good. I had to pick this one up on vinyl.
