Great book, prescient

This book says much of what Alain de Botton says in his recent Religion for Atheists, except it was published 80 years before. Not a lot of citation here, but there's no doubt that Lippmann's outrageously erudite and an incredible synthetic thinker. He's basically arguing that religious institutions need to be adapted to fit a modern, scientific world, and that there is an ascetic form of religion that is practiced by all the great prophets and is the part we should pay attention to. This is a great book to read in conjunction with John Dewey's A Common Faith, published five years later, which is a similar in its critique of institutions (though of course Dewey's argument differs on some important points).

This book could be written in the last 10 years. The principles in the book are as applicable now as they were in the 20's and 30's. I think this should be required reading for every high school and college student.

Humanism and Disinterestedness

Writing just before the Great Depression, Lippmann details modern man's loss of faith in ancestral religion and the resulting moral insecurity. Lippmann's proposed solution is a stoic disinterestedness in feeling and humanism in morality. "Insofar as men have now lost their belief in a heavenly king, they have to find some other ground for their moral choices than the revelation of his will. . . . Such morality may properly be called humanism, for it is centered not in superhuman but in human nature." (p. 128). As Ronald Steel argued in his biography of Lippmann, "A Preface to Morals" provides a method of dulling the effects of modern man's anxiety, but it does not provide a positive philosophy of conduct. Lippmann deserves slightly more credit. The result of Lippmann's effort to replace popular religion with "high religion" is a clear call to reflectively discipline the human will, a process which on the basis of experience will yield "happiness, serenity, and whole-heartedness." (p. 182).

This book has stood the test of time because of its forthrightness and clarity. The book is thought provoking but not unapproachably philosophical. The book is suitable for a general audience interested in 20th century public philosophy.
