This "Prelude" is an introduction from the eyes of Jack'slove interest, Sam, from the time they meet until Sam's father takes ill. Sam,being loving and gentle of spirit, longs to see his father and brothers. He ishomesick, but Jack prefers their life on the farm and is in fear of tempting theGiant because of all Jack's transgressions. All that said, I loved this truecharacter study of Sam. The POV is Sam's so there is an added depth andappreciation for the sacrifices Sam has made in the reflection of Jack'sresponsibilities and love. This beautifully written prelude cast's Sam as theprotagonist of his own story but functions to add depth to both characters. Itreminds us that every love story is about the bond, the affection, the sacrificesbetween two people, between lovers. One person cannot have a single dimensionlove affair and their partner has needs and yearnings too.
Sam is blackmailed into betraying Jack.
Every mirror has a reflection, and Sam's Quandary is Jack's.I loved this story but then, I so admire this author for his ability to spin aheartfelt tale with sweeping tangible descriptions and you will, too. I highlyrecommend everything this author writes and have long been an admirer and fan.
