Chopin's 24 preludes, one in each of the twenty-four possible keys, were written as a successor of sorts to Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier. They are beautiful pieces, some of which are ultra-famous, such as No. 4 in E minor, No. 6 in B minor, the ubiquitous No. 15 in D-flat major, the Raindrop Prelude, and No. 20 in C minor. All are worthy of hearing, and they were presumably written to be heard as a set as the tempos often contrast from adjacent pieces from fast to slow. The recording here is very nice and the CD is filled out with some Chopin miscellany.

Twenty-four Preludes, three Nocturnes, Contabile in B-flat major, and Contredanse in G-flat major all totaling 65 minutes are included here. Barto plays them all with style and emotion, but a bit more energy on some would be to my liking. The quality of the sound and the dynamic qualities of the recording are very good. I recommend this album; it is an especially good value at the discounted price.

I was unfamiliar with Tzimon Barto until introduced to his work by a new Amazon friend. I'm very grateful, indeed.
These Chopin preludes and nocturnes, to which I listened as a young woman on Vladimir Horowitz LPs, are extremely well executed here, with the additional advantage that the CD is available at an unbelievably low cost.
If you love Chopin, specifically, or classical compositions for piano in general, I can't recommend this recording highly enough.

So this is my first Chopin CD and if this is a fairly complete sampling of his type of work, then I'm not a fan. The pianist is skilled and does a good job in playing the work so my critique is not about him. I just didn't like the compositions. There was just not much to grab on to - I did not come out of listening to it humming anything I just heard. And since most was very short, just when I thought Chopin may have had a motif going, the piece ends without the motif being developed (or even just repeated).
There seemed to me to be two types of compositions on the CD: fast, finger agility exercises and slow, arppeggiated chords progressions. The fast ones do show the pianist's virtuosity but is just not enjoyable to listen to, not like say, Flight of the Bumble Bee, which can show virtuosity but is a joy to listen to. The slow pieces on the other hand sounds to me just like the piano accompaniment part of a duet or small combo. I was wanting for a melodic instrument (oboe, clarinet, violin, etc) to be playing a good melody above those slow pieces.
As for using it to relax, it's just too annoying and boring to me for it to be even relaxing. Sorry, Chopin fans, give me Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, Handel, or Vivaldi any day.

Beautiful. Lively. Somber. Deathly. This is a superb recording of a superb pianist. This album is very emotional, flowing from joy to rage, and from rage to the truest depths of depression. This is an album that will stay with me for the rest of my life. The one thing that I do not like about this album is Barto's playing of the famous "Raindrop" piece. Ashkenazy's interpretation is by far more appropriate in my opinion. Buy this CD! You will not be disappointed!

This beautiful music was purchased for relaxation and it is perfect for that. I play it while reading or getting ready for sleep.

I found this cd to be a great listening tool when working on Chopin's Preludes. The pianist is very sensitive to the Romantic musical style, allowing for a sense of understanding of some of the most difficult harmonies of the 19th century. Highly recommended!

Fryderyk Chopin was a concert pianist who created his own compositions. They are as sad as they are beautiful. This record allows the melancholy of the composer and pianist to really show. It is well recorded and seems to attempt to portray the artist music with it full intensity.

the wonder of Tzimon Barto
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 24, 2016
I'm a huge fan of Tzimon Barto's piano-playing, for the way he brings new life to repertoire you thought you knew to saturation point. He has the daring, the imagination to make the music sing anew, strong and unpredictable. This is certainly what is needed in Chopin's Preludes, I would say, perhaps the central work in all Chopin's output, yet one which can sound like drifting though a landscape so familiar one no longer sees it. Barto's playing strips away the glaze and reveals every shape of phrase and balance in the texture as if from scratch. He tends to opt for slower tempos, so that No. 6 sounds really quite drawn out, almost in slow motion, yet when you arrive at a repeated C major arpeggio somewhere in the middle, what beatitude, what expansiveness he brings out! The famous C minor Prelude is another case in point: quite slow, and getting slower still, yet every chord is placed with some unerring sense of rightness that amounts to an extraordinary instinct. When it comes to the repeat of the second phrase, you wonder if he will pull it off having already slowed so much, but he does, and it sounds rapt, understated, the very essence of what we can express.
The louder numbers have a great sense of force, of course, but often held in some reserve. This means that where he does let go, the power is astounding - it the last piece, for instance, where he doubles up the bass notes at key axes to cataclysmic effect. He also shapes the bass motif interestingly throughout here, making it sound like a movement from one note up to a higher one, but nothing is snatched. After this, the few slow pieces allow us to come down to earth via a gentle reverberation; it's a bit like finding a thinner, softer quilt under a larger one, but the smaller one is also made of a strong thread for all its softness. It really is a classic recording, made in 1990, and revealing Barto to be a Chopin interpreter with something unique to say.
