Advantages
The traditional way of filling fountain pen converters comes with a handful of issues.
1. Filling a converter in the traditional fashion makes it hard to get them to fill all the way, be they bladder, or piston. You end up with a lot of air in them. Filling a converter with this means you’ll get a full converter every time. Just go a little slow at first so you don’t overfill. I like this brand in particular because it’s a little “sticky” and if you go with it, it fills more slowly with less risk of a problem.
2. Filling a converter in the traditional fashion can muddy your ink. It’s hard to get it perfectly cleaned, and when you’re trying to pull in the ink, especially with a bladder fill system, it means squirting ink back into the bottle. These are easy to clean perfectly, meaning your ink stays pristine. I like the length this particular one offers, for both the needle tip and the body.
3. Filling a converter in the traditional fashion means dealing with the converter after it’s been in the bottle and while you’re putting it back in the pen. This can lead to inky hands. With this, you aren’t touching the needle tip that goes into the ink at any point, so you won’t get ink on your hands. The needle goes into the ink and then into the converter, and if you don’t overfill, it never touches the outside of the converter so no mess. The longer needle tip here is a big help. You don’t want one of the brands with a short tip if this is an issue.
4. There is no good way I’ve ever found to use the traditional converter method to fill a brush pen, such as the ones from Kuretake. This works perfectly. It’s the only thing I’d even consider.
Safety
This one is especially safe. The needle tip is not sharp. It can’t cut or scratch you. It will bend if you push it to hard, but it won’t break skin.
Ease of cleaning
These are so much easier to clean than a converter. Just pull the plunger all the way out (I so love how this brand allows that) run it under water, run water through the body and you’re done.
Issues
I have once or twice had some issues reassembling them after cleaning them. I won’t ding it a star for that, since I can get them together again. It’s just that these are particularly fiddly.
