The reason why people are misled is because Wilee is the main character. The film starts off with Wilee getting hit by a car, and then he describes his job as a bike messenger, and the dangers that go along with it. The intro also tells you this will be an action movie, but with a twist because almost the entire story takes place on a bike. Director David Koepp used some innovative techniques to highlight biking in Manhattan as slow motion, movement lines, maps and Wilee contemplating routes he can take to avoid hitting pedestrians and not getting hit by cars.
With all that being said, that’s not even the main plot. The story actually focuses upon a Chinese immigrant named Nima (Jamie Chung) who gives Wilee a package to be dropped off in Chinatown, which is also wanted by a corrupt cop Detective Bobby Monday (Michael Shannon). Monday chases Wilee across the city to get the package. It turns out the package has huge importance that is not revealed until the end, which makes the film very poignant.
That provides much of the action. Along the way it reveals why Monday is such a crooked cop as well. Shannon has always been great as a bad guy and this is no exception.
The movie also has multiple perspectives as it keeps flipping back and forth between Wilee and Monday, and sometimes Nima. It is also nonlinear as it keeps flashing backwards and forwards.
If you want to see a different kind of action movie with a larger message about immigrants and corruption then try Premium Rush.

A little fun perhaps? Well, I was totally wrong.

It gave me a huge joy. I laughted the whole time not because it was funny but it was so fun to watch.
Joseph Gordon Rivett and Michael Shannon were so fun to look at through the whole time.
But most of all, the special effect that made this chase scenes make real was the real deal.
When Joseph was going to the opposie lane to get rid of Michael, when he was crashed with cars, I was like not able to see straight.
The cars are dashing so fast and almost about to crash into Joseph's bike or really crashed from time to time.
He just wanted to deliver the small envelop to save this Chinese woman's child's life. (Which is acually a bit corney but was ok)
The navigation Effect showing the whole city from the above was also fun to watch as you will see.
This movie again shows how important the script is.
It is so small and simple but very delicate and detailed it was. They won with the idea not the budget or big time actors.
Some will of course complain the fact that they used the poor Chinsese involement and all but that's just a small part of the story and which movie didn't?
Lethal Weappon 4 and so many other movied did. So let's just forgive them about that.
The cat chase mouse thing was totally fun to watch the whole time.
Especially knowing the fact that Michael Shannon is a dirty cop who is really desperate to earn money since he is gamble eddict and lost all the money and has a lot and lot of debt and about to die for that. He is chasing for something which is in Joseph's pocket.
But Joseph has to deliver it for not only for money but for this Chinese girl.
He think that this delivery can save this girl's daughter. Now it depends on his single delivery.
He is a very 'earnest' man.
The endless chase starts and that will drive you crazy.
Are you ready for this?
David Koepp is an amazing writer and wrote many great scripts before such as MISSION IMPOSSIBLE, JURRASIC PARK, SIDERMAN, WAR OF THE WORLDS. He made hidden masterpiece STIR OF ECHO and now this film.
Don't miss this one.

This 2012 film was directed and co-written by David Koepp. Koepp has directed a small number of moderately well-received films, but as a screenwriter, he is in a small, select band of mega-successful writers. He was the man behind several of cinema’s biggest hits from the late 1990s onwards, including ‘Jurassic Park’(1993) and it’s first sequel(1997); ‘Carlito’s Way’(1993); ‘Spiderman’(2002) and ‘War of the Worlds’(2005). The huge Box Office gross of his titles suggests Koepp really knows how to grab the attention of an audience, and then how to get them talking, thus bringing in the crowds. In general terms, the secrets of his success are an exciting, well-paced and coherent story, rounded and likeable characters, and a certain novelty value.
This film certainly has most of the above ingredients. It is emphatically a one-off, a story not told in this way before, though set in the familiar surroundings of New York’s streets and parks. This however, is New York seen in a new way, from the saddle of a courier bike, fast, furious, and decidedly risky. The story is simple and engaging. The characters are fun, if slightly under-developed. Joseph Gordon-Levitt is a talented actor with a repertoire ranging from comedy ~ he received multiple award nominations for his part in sitcom ‘Third Rock from the Sun’(1996-2001) ~ to sci-fi films like Inception’(2010) and biopics such as ’Lincoln’(2012). Here he has great fun as the courier rider without brakes, who ends up inadvertently drawing the attention and ire of more than one of New York’s finest. One of these is the wonderful Michael Shannon, who routinely excels as slightly disheveled and stressed baddies ~ TV series ‘Boardwalk Empire’(2010-2014) for which he received multiple award nominations; ‘The Shape of Water’(2017). Here, he is again, an unpleasant, remorseless bad guy.
The film was made on the streets of New York during mid-summer 2010. Gordon-Levitt even managed to genuinely collide with a taxi during shooting. And it must have been absolutely cooking, in amongst the taxis and trucks, and the high rise plate glass exteriors and asphalt of the city’s streets. Koepp directs with verve and unstoppable pace; the cast peddle, sweat and give us an entertaining, amusing line in back-chat, street-speak and repartee. There is plenty of excitement, some splendidly filmed and funny set pieces, and some clever uses of a non-linear time line, to break up the action.
If I have a criticism, it is that the action goes full pelt so quickly that it robs the film of an ability to insert some light and shade. There are changes of pace, but I found myself wanting Koepp to take his foot off the pedal more often. So, clever, fun, and nicely entertaining, but slightly flat.
Well he gets asked to pick up a letter from the University for a mere thirty bucks and get it to a specific address within two hours. First thing that happens is a corrupt cop tries to get it from him, but Wille does a runner or rather heads off in the mad traffic being pursued by Detective Bobby Monday played with pantomime nastiness by Michael Shannon (of the really good `Take Shelter' and the not so really good `Pear Harbor'). Thus we are all set for a high octane chase through Manhattan and I must say the last time I saw this many `horns' getting blown was in a cheap porno.
This is a sit back and turn your brain off kind of flick. It is just a full throttle action fest based on bicycles and a few cars getting in the way and ineptly crashing into things. There are also issues around Chinese immigration and the troubles they encounter in order to get into a country - even legally and the culture rift there is between them and the West and it is all handled rather well. There is also the relationship bit which sits quite well within the stories context.
Directed by David Koepp who is more famous for his writing abilities but he did direct `Stir of Echoes' and has worked on `Spiderman', `Mission Impossible' and even that last `Indiana Jones and the Crystal Meth' or what ever it was called, but either way the guy clearly has talent. He crams all this action into 91 minutes so there is no way you are ever going to get bored. If you like this there is a great little Korean film called `Adrenaline Rush', about a motor bike courier and lots of explosions which is also an action fest on two wheels. All in all this is a great film to just sit back and enjoy.
Willie is the top bike messenger in New York City. He cuts between traffic, through pedestrians, and any other obstacles to deliver his package on time. He rides a steel frame bike with only one ultra-high gear and no breaks. The same way he lives his life always going forwards never stopping. Willie's main rival at work and for the affections of his girlfriend is Manny, the second fastest rider who will do anything to undercut Willie. Once again it is impressive how much research and time has been done for this movie everything looks and feels authentic from the characters look, to their attitude and mannerisms. Willie is given a package to deliver across New York City. The trouble is someone else want it and is willing to do anything to get it.
Great chase scenes, with bikes vs. cars, bikes vs. bikes, bikes vs. people. This film is truly original, really funny and entertaining. After watching this you will appreciate all the hard work from everyone involved in this film to make something magical. Watch it you won't regret it.
The good guys are easily defined as good and the bad guys are suitably bad. It all plays out like a comic book adventure with plenty of action, chases and the odd bit of sentiment and romance thrown in to the bargain.
In many ways Premium Rush is the perfect film. It's easy to watch, not hard to understand and could probably double as a `date movie' as it would most likely enjoyed by couples (men for the action and woman as there seems to be plenty of topless men!).
If you want to rest your mind, get out a big bag of popcorn, pick `n mix or your snacks of choice, put your brain `on hold' and enjoy the daftness of the ride.
I like Joseph Gordon-Levitt a lot, he's come a long way since "Third Rock from the Sun" and chooses an interesting mix of movies - popcorn films like this one and deeper ones such as "Mysterious Skin" and "The Lookout". Michael Shannon is always entertaining and this time around he plays the "baddie" - actually he pretty much always plays the main "disturbed" character when he's in a film but he's very good at it!
Sometimes you just want to watch a film and be entertained - this ticks the boxes!
