Plenty of Storage Space
- Wood slats positioned length-wise distribute body weight evenly
- Suitable for standard king-sized mattresses
Prepac King Mate’s Platform Storage Bed
Ensure a good night’s sleep
At 18” deep, its six drawers can store any clothing, linens and blankets that go in a traditional chest, without taking up more room in your bedroom. With three drawers on each side, there’s room for everyone’s stuff. Don’t worry about a box spring: the slat support system needs only a mattress.
- Sturdy drawers with solid wood sides glide on metal runners with built-in safety stops
Our King Platform Storage Beds combine extra large drawers for plenty of storage space with a slat support system that requires only a mattress. Wood slats are positioned lengthwise to distribute body weight evenly, minimize the amount of motion transfer and take the place of a box-spring. Metal braces under the slats provide additional stability. Underneath are 6 large storage drawers (20” depth) that run on smooth running metal drawer glides. Drawers open easily with finger pulls located at the bottom of drawer fronts and knobs have been eliminated to prevent bedclothes from catching. They are large enough to hold anything you need to store: linens, blankets, clothes, socks and even shoes are just a few ideas. Coordinate with the King Headboard and other Prepac bedroom furniture pieces. Overall bed height is 21” if used with an 8” thick mattress. Available in two attractive finishes: Black and Espresso overlay laminates. This product is made from composite woods with plywood slats. It ships flat-packed (in three cartons) and self-assembly is required. Detailed and easy-to-follow instructions are included.

People were also complaining about the slats not staying in place, and being too noisy, so I bought an entire bolt of thicker felt and glued it to the inside of the metal brackets where the slats sit, and also cut a large piece to cover the slats with (to quiet them, and also to keep the loose splinters from tearing up the underside of my mattress), and I tacked those down with flat head thumb tacks.
Our bed frame is sturdy, we're able to reposition the bed without the drawers falling out or the bed frame becoming 'unsquared', and the only noise the bed makes is during, uhhhh.... bedtime fun, if the frame knocks against the matching headboard. The only complaint people had that I've not yet been able to solve is the gap between the frame and the matching headboard, although I'm thinking of adding a sort of mesh 'hammock' because a.) you won't be able to see it with the pillows on the bed, and b.) if you drop anything down there, it's a NIGHTMARE to get it back.
With all that said, this is not a bed frame for people who plan on moving a lot (the reinforcements kinda negate disassembly), people who rearrange their room often, or for people who don't want to take the extra steps/spend the extra money to make it work.
All the pieces arrived in perfect condition, and with all the necessary hardware. I'm a 5' 5", 115 pound female, so I had to open the boxes outside and carry the pieces in, but I assembled this entire frame, the matching headboard, and 2 matching end tables completely by myself over the span of 3 days. The directions weren't too bad to work with, you'll just need to GO SLOW, READ ALL THE DIRECTIONS CAREFULLY, and sort/label all the parts and hardware before you get started.
It looks great, and it's the EXACT bed frame/headboard I wanted, so the extra work/cost was worth it to me.
Here's the long and the short of it... this product ABSOLUTELY has a BLINDINGLY OBVIOUS design flaw that (as it comes from the factor) makes it unfit for its intended purpose (a sleeping platform). BUT... IT IS FIXABLE for someone with basic carpentry skills. HOWEVER... it is not being marketed as a 90% bed kit, it is being sold to consumers. Therefore, even though I actually like the bed (as it stands in my room, correctly modified), I must give it the lowest possible rating because it is in violation of US law of implied warranties.
If you're up for a challenge, I recommend allocating a whole day for the assembly, and acquiring (1) a box of self-tapping metal screws (to fixate the floating slats), (2) two 2x12s each 26+3/8" long (or 1x12s if you are even more of a craftsman), (3) a dozen moderately long fasteners to engage the 2x12s. The extra structure should make a self-sturdy "box" in the middle. If you can see the attached image, you might be able to see how the structure would not hold (for a particular head-to-toe direction of force) without the added structure.
I don't agree with the other reviews concerns the use of metal brackets to fix it's flaw, but I imagine that it's better than nothing.
Best of luck!
Most of this bed is particle board and veneer, so you have to be pretty careful with it or it'll scrape the finish. I stepped on one of the boards and dented it! One slat was missing from my order, and this bed along with the headboard have similar issues with the styrofoam packaging sticking to the finish and damaging it. It's like the foam is melted to the veneer. Removing it damages the finish. I managed to put the entire bed together before noticing the missing slat and realizing I couldn't fix the veneer. Notified amazon and they were going to send a whole new bed and let me pick out the pieces I wanted, then send it back! I opted for a partial refund which I thought was fair.
I think I spent six hours putting the bed together, gluing, reinforcing, and cutting and placing felt on the bottom to keep it from damaging the floors. Another reviewer said the bed is too heavy to move? I disagree.. our mattress is heavier than the bed.
We tried using thin box springs at first but the mattress was too high so we removed them. The bed height (you sit at) with our 13.5 inch mattress is about 26 inches. The drawers feel cheap and were were going to use them as a dresser but I don't think they'll stand up to the use, so may just store extra bedding in them.
Anyway, I'd recommend if you enjoy building these things and taking your time to make them go together right.
One last note on making the bed "square." The instructions show you how to fix drawers not fitting correctly by making the bed more square by pushing on it after it's already put together. Well I put right angle metal supports on each board-board right angle connection, so my bed is square. But one of the drawers in the corner still had a gap on one side. I moved the drawer to a different spot and it fit fine with no gaps. I'm not sure if I got lucky but none of the drawers had gaps after this.
