But I saw it here around Black Friday for $89.00 and I jumped on it!! Took about a week for delivery by it free (Prime) .... took me all of 20 minutes to put together VERY simple to do! I was very impressed on the over look and thinking it was "IKEA" style when reading the discription online I have to say it's Way better then anything IKEA does.
My 3 and 5 year have already sat and stood on it. Very heavy and very sturdy and I'm not worried the nuts/ bolts will come free from the abuse my kids will do lol.
I did have my husband add a wood block under it towards the back for a brace since my kids sat on it. ((( there is a match bench /shoe cubby that comes with the block brace so I added based on that model and then being the same length))
The other thing I would do if this was on hard wood floors I would buy better pads to nail to be bottom to not scratch the floors. The ones that come with this are tiny hard black plastic which will protect the cubby from damage but might not be good on wood floors.
Picture with fat cat for reference...
It arrived at the house while I was at work, and my wife had it assembled before I got home. Surprisingly, it has real, solid wood. I weigh 275 lb, and it doesn't even flinch. The color looks just as it does in the photos, and the cubbie holes are spacious (deep enough for a size 15 pair of shoes). It is the perfect height for sitting down and taking off your shoes. I'm not really sure what else you would use it for - maybe putting kids on a "time out?" We bought a cushion from a local retailer to put on top of the bench and it looks great.
My only complaint is that the cardboard backing is flimsy and almost useless. It's pretty standard for pieces of furniture of this price, though, so consider yourself warned. When you push the bench up against a wall, you won't even know the difference.
All in all, for $90, it's a good choice.
It was very easy to assemble, directions were accurate and the end product fit perfectly in the mud area I built. I sit on it to put on and take off my shoes everyday. Very sturdy. I even put in separators during the assembly process so that I could use it to put shoes into. I highly recommend this item, you won't be disappointed!
Why not 5 stars? It's pressboard and the same fastening techniques which made it such a pleasure to quickly put together will also make it vulnerable. I'm a wood snob. Perhaps I'm being unfair for not giving it that 5th star as it is exactly what I purchased, but I foresee, like all pressboard products, that this product will solve a problem for a set period of time before it gets banged up. Especially if subjected to the kind of prolonged abuse children tend to dish out on items that can be climbed/sat upon such as this. Unlike real wood, once pressboard starts to fall apart, it's history. You can't simply use a bigger screw and a bit of wood glue to cobble it back together and refinish it. Especially this particular kind of pressboard, which is more porous than medium density fiberboard. However, this cubby was 1/4 the price of a wooden one. I feel I got exactly what I paid for and I am happy with my purchase.
My only real 'complaint' is that the decorative trim at the very bottom only has screws at both ends (to help hold the sides together, I presume) but no 'pegs' in the middle as the other pieces have. If you kick the kick-trim, it moves inward. Having 2-3 additional pegs in the middle would add a bit more structural integregrity not only to prevent that, but also add a bit more strength to the overall design.
If you don't mind pressboard and want an attractive, functional storage cubby to solve a problem for the 5-7 years I anticipate this product will last, I highly recommend it. It looks every bit as nice as the $400 wooden one I priced at one of the name-brand furniture stores. Amortized over the anticipated lifespan, it is money well spent. It looks mighty nice in my mudroom and nobody would ever know I cheaped out unless they pull it out and look at the back of it.
