Product Description

The Classic Herb Saver by Prepara can store and preserve freshly cut herbs for up to three weeks. In the Prepara test kitchen, herbs kept in the herb saver stayed fresh up to two weeks longer than herbs kept in the fridge alone. To use, open the clear case and lay herbs inside, then close the case. Remove the reservoir stopper and add fresh water to the base. Place the clear case with fresh herbs in the reservoir, allowing the herbs to stay upright with their stems in the water. While storing, occassionally replace the water for freshness. Ideal for storing rosemary, basil, parsley and more!

I hate having good herbs go brown and gross waiting for another dish I can use them in. Being able to water them, like any other plant, and keep them cool at the same time, is pretty useful. This definitely increases the life of the herbs. I do find there to be a lot of parts--the two halves go together, the little clip goes in, and then the whole thing goes into the stand. And the plug comes out for putting water in. It is a little tougher to assemble and disassemble than I thought it would be, but nonetheless it's very handy.

I love fresh herbs but over the winter buy them (at high prices) at the grocery store and then HATE it when they go bad in days. With the Herb Savor, I've kept basil for more than two weeks and I've put basil and mint together with no cross flavoring. Fresh mint lasts a month.

The Herb Savor is easy to clean and use. In fact, I'm buying one for my mom for Mother's Day. I may get one for my sister while I'm at it. I had heard about this product but it actualy exceeded my expectations. It paid for itself with the first four batches of herbs that didn't go bad before I could use them.

I found my Herb Savor at the thrift store for the bargain basement price of $3. After using it for the first time, I now know why the item was donated! It is too narrow to store a large bunch of herbs and the herbs would be all squished up inside and it rots even faster because of the condensation. I have found a better way to store my herbs! Place the herbs with cut ends down in a utensil holder that has some water in it to cover about 2 inches. Place a plastic produce bag over the herbs and put it in the fridge. I guarantee that the herbs will last much longer than in this contraption!

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
This review is going to broken into parts, as a fair evaluation requires considerable time considering the "3 weeks fresh" claim. For this initial review we tested just under two weeks with Cilantro, a flat leaf parsley. One half of a large bunch was washed and put in a bag with damp paper towel, the other half put in the PHS according to directions, and refrigerated. At two weeks, both had instances of leaves turning brown, but on only a portion of the herb with a majority still usable. No clear advantage to the PHS though. Next we bought basil, and this gets interesting, as the PHS says to NOT refrigerate the basil, yet the fresh basil itself had instructions to do so. Half the basil washed and put in fridge with damp towel, half in PHS on counter away from stove. This test was discontinued after three days, as the basil in the PHS was decayed. I am now wondering if instructions from Prepara have changed, since others mention that basil was excluded from their instructions. I am going to have to give it a 2 1/2 total, since basil is one of the more expensive herbs, and this doesn't help there.

I have looked at the Prepara herb saver, and finally bought one three weeks ago. On the outside of the box, it plainly says it can be used to store basil, but to store it in a cool place, NOT in the frig. I have a horrible time with basil turning brown in a couple of days in the frig, so I bought the Prepara. I trimmed the stems a little, dodn't wash the basil, thinking that may make it turn sooner. Put the container in a cool place away from the stove, and almost three weeks later, the basil is still beautiful. I replaced the water once, and trimmed the stems at the same time, and have been using it ever since. IT WORKS GREAT.

I love how the herb saver looks; it is sleek and stands well in the refrigerator; it is made of good quality plastic. However, once you put your herbs in it, you may never be able to open it to get them out. I succeeded once. The other times, yes, many tries by more than one person, were unsuccessful. we pressed here, there, everywhere. We tugged. Finally I just threw it away, herbs and all - it was just not worth the effort. So I am back to partly wrapping herbs in a paper towel in a a plastic bag. Don't waste your money on this.

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
The Herb Savor really does a fantastic job preserving fresh herbs in the fridge. As a caveat, I have a commercial fridge & everything seems to keep longer in it than in a regular residental fridge. To get an accurate comparison, I did a side-by-side test in the fridge using a glass of water, a sealed plastic bag, and the Herb Savor, using fresh flatleaf parsley. The parsley in the plastic bag and the glass of water each lasted for about 10 days (longer than I expected, frankly); the parsley in the Herb Savor was still dark green, crisp & flavorful A MONTH LATER. Dude. I don't know how long it would have held out because I needed it for a recipe. (And I admit that I completely forgot to refill it, so that month of life happened without any additional water beyond the first fill-up.)

Now, flatleaf parsley isn't the most perishable of herbs (I'll test it next with cilantro, which almost always goes south before I have a chance to finish a bu nch).

The unit is basically a perforated metal tray with a plastic case that forms an upright cage that rests in the water reservoir. The reservior has a plug that allows it to be refilled without removing it from the shelf. The reservoir is weighted, and I had no issues with it tipping, even on the widely-spaced wire shelves of my commercial fridge.

It's attractive, nicely weighted, easy to clean, and the exact size of those little pods of herbs you get at the grocery store.

My only complaint is that it's too small for herbs that come in larger bunches, like cilantro, or herbs you might get from the farmer's market or CSA. If you only use the grocery store pods, it's genius & definitely a 5-star product.

Added: recently tossed some completely ragged, wilted mint in the Herb Savor & it perked it right back up the next day--crisp and bright. I had almost thrown it out, but I'm glad I gave the herb savor a try first.
