About the Author
Gaye Levy grew up and attended school in the Greater Seattle area, graduating from the University of Washington. She spent many years as an executive in the telecommunications software industry and later as a CFO to emerging technology and service companies.
While still working in her chosen field, Gaye abandoned city life and moved to a serenely beautiful rural area on San Juan Island in NW Washington State. Recognizing the risks of being in a remote area served primarily by Washington State ferries, she soon realized that a disaster of any type, be it natural or man-made, would soon leave her community cut off from goods and supplies from the mainland for days or even weeks. As a result, she learned everything she could about living a preparedness lifestyle and began the process of acquiring goods and skills which would allow her and her family to survive on their own for an extended period of time and without the need for outside assistance.
Gaye teaches the principles of preparedness and a self-reliant lifestyle through emergency preparation and disaster planning at her website BackdoorSurvival.com. As a blogger, she shares her nuts-and-bolts knowledge and common sense perspective in a way which is non-intimidating, friendly and easy to understand.
Gaye's emphasis is on prepping for the mainstream while doing so with compassion for others and optimism for a positive outcome, no matter what.
In her spare time, Gaye and her husband are avid ballroom dancers and enjoy hiking, kayaking, gardening and living life to the fullest along with their dog, Tucker, in their island home along the shores of San Juan Island in Washington State.

In 2010, Gaye established the website BackdoorSurvival.com. where she shared her firsthand experience as a prepper in a no-nonsense fashion. In 2017, and over 1500 articles later, she passed the reins of her website to new owners and is no longer involved in its day to day operations or content.
Also in 2017, Gaye moved to Arizona and established a fully-stocked survival retreat on an acre in Rim Country. She now spends her time there, enjoying the sunny weather and feeling blessed to have finally have an acre of land she can call her own.
These days Gaye writes for her new website, StrategicLivingBlog.com. The focus of Strategic Living is happiness, wellness, and comfort with an emphasis on essential oils with a bit of prepping thrown in.
In her spare time, Gaye and her husband are avid ballroom dancers and enjoy performing in community theatre, cooking, hiking, kayaking, and living life to the fullest along with their dog, Tucker.

for emergencies and disasters, but they just don't know how to begin, especially when it comes to food. What kinds? How should I store it? Where should I store it?
Gaye Levy answers those questions giving some great ideas of what to store, normal items that we use in our everyday lives. While most of us have our own likes and dislikes, her 20 items of what to start storing is great for giving you ideas of what it would take to feed your family in an emergency situation. She takes it even further by helping you to develop a plan of what foods to store for your family.
I really like her tips of starting out slow and spending wisely. You don't want to break your family budget to do this, but you do want to have extra on hand for any emergency.
Her tips on food storage, finding space and the conditions needed for storage are good ones. She covers the common food storage mistakes that people make, and I think she covers it well and gives some very simple, practical advice that anyone can use.
What I liked most about it is the author's advice to not get caught up in the panic-mode of running out and buying everything a family would need for some chosen length of time --- like for a whole year at a time (unless, of course, your financial situation and storage space both permit that overwhelming feat).
Gaye Levy lists about 20 staples we ordinarily use during meal preparation for "kick-starting" a well stocked pantry a little at a time. Additionally, she explains how to store those food products using methods that can ensure greatest shelf life.
She also points out how to avoid common mistakes made by folks who suddenly realize it's a good idea to begin stocking up on food... I wish I had read this book years ago when I was new to the idea of "prepping" --- for instance, I grabbed stuff I'd really not ordinarily eat. What happened to it? It sat in my pantry for so long that I either had to give it away to charitable organizations before the "best by date" or throw it out if several years beyond that "best by" date had passed.
