About the Author

One night a father overheard his son pray: Dear God, Make me the kind of man my Daddy is. Later that night, the Father prayed, Dear God, Make me the kind of man my son wants me to be. That passage summarizes who I am. My family, and the experiences we create, is reflected in my life and writings. My family is the reason I prepare for either a Shit Hits The Fan (SHTF) or Significant Life Altering Event (SLAE). They are my “everything”.

Formally, my name is Bryan Foster, penname Zion Prepper, and I hold a MS – Chemistry, MS – Management, MBA, and BS – Forensic Chemistry. I’m a Christian, husband, father, author, and Navy veteran. My books include: "Ebola Survival Guide", "The Prepper’s Handbook – First/Second Edition”, “The Christian Prepper’s Handbook – First/Second Edition”, “The Prepper’s Survival Guide: An Introduction to Prepping and a Guide to Fire”, "The Survival Triangle: Fire", and “The Prepper’s Survival Guide: Sheltering-In-Place”.

The ten bucks will do you more good in your prep stash than this book. This is strictly for beginners, and I gave it three stars for beginners. If you want to plan for natural disasters this is a fair start; if you want to plan for SHTF this is not the book by any means.

If you want to plan for SHTF then I would suggest a cheaper alternative, the internet. There have been a couple SHTF's in recent history, for instance Argentina's financial collapse and the Bosnian war. There are many REAL survival stories from both of these on the internet and from them you will learn what it's really like, (this books author does not know what its really like, he's a pilgrim) and you will learn a lot more.

If you want a good useful book I think one on outdoor survival techniques would serve you better than this. Lastly, I'd recommend if you are really serious, tape your refrigerator shut, tape your toilets shut, turn off your water, shut off all electrical everything (except your frig, no need to damage good food for an experiment) and shut off anything running on gas. Try that for a weekend and you'll be a lot smarter than you are now. Primitive campers will do better than most, but it will be eye-opening for all. While you're drinking out of your hot water heater you'll wish you had that survival book to read since there's no internet. You'll wish you had a camp toilet and a LOT of garbage bags, but you'll be learning real fast. If you're in a cold climate, don't do this when the pipes could freeze, but realizing they will freeze and what might flood, what might be damaged, should be part of your learning knowledge. With no TV or internet you'll have a lot of time to think, and to think about the problems associated with every season in your area.

This is a great read. If you keep in mind that it's suggested guidance on how to think about and approach prepping and not a strict mandate on how to prep, you'll do just fine. I wasn't getting much push back on doing the prepping, just not so much support. After my wife read the book, I've got a lot more support.

I started prepping a few months ago but did not understand the concept and terminology of the prepper language.
This book explains that terminology and is very easy to understand. Some may say this is a book for beginners. It
was the basics and more. I enjoyed all that the book had to offer. I say 5 STARS! Buy it!

I found this guide to prepping to be extremely basic. I have had an interest in prepping for a while, but I am not much of one yet. Got through this in about an hour on my flight. I believe this guide would be alright for someone with almost no idea what prepping is. If you are buying this as a gift for someone unsuspecting maybe. But if you have any general interest or common sense you already know more than this book. As I got further into the guide it seemed more like an essay written for a class. Many topics were covered but merely used listed as bullet points or just touching on the subject.

This book is a great intro to the concept of prepping and its many facets. While obviously not meant to be an in depth study of any of the particular topics it covers, the author has done an admirable job of providing a guide to help those just getting started prepping (ie, it's probably not meant for the guy with an off-the-grid 150 acre BOL stocked with 5 years food/water, 50k rounds of ammo and a wood-burning-stove-powered truck). But it is also useful to those who are more journeyman preppers. I suspect many folks kind of stumble into prepping without really realizing they are preppers until they are into it for a while... and therefore many times they don't really have a good solid understanding of the topic as a whole... and this book provides that overview in an excellent fashion. And even if you are an advanced prepper this book covers the basics in such a concise manner that having it in your library for quick reference is just a good idea!

Prepper's book is well written and presents the prepper position from a practical point of view. The approach is illustrated with a triangle, the sides (or corners) represent the fundamentals of the system. He goes into detail on these fundamentals, detail he and his family have put into practice: equipment they have used, ideas they have implemented. None of this is radical or hardcore survivalist, but is based on their experience, their evaluation of what is required to protect and provide for one another should a natural or manmade disaster occur that isolates them from the everyday requirements of procuring food, water, shelter, fuel, medical attention, and safety for a period of a days to several months.

This is not an eccentric attitude even in the U.S. A major earthquake on the San Andreas or New Madrid faults, especially with extended aftershocks could overload the emergency response systems especially in smaller cities and towns. A level 5 hurricane moving along an extended coastal area or tsunami as in the north of Japan could incapacitate response systems for days due to infrastructure damage if not damage to the response systems themselves. Ready access to basic necessities could save lives. The recommendations in this book are not extreme nor are the basics beyond the means of many people. Much of this is just the next step to keeping a spare tire and flashlight in your vehicle or a first aid kit in the house.
