I decided that I needed a nut chopper and purchased this item based on the overwhelmingly positive reviews. My first use of this chopper was for chopping pecans and I was immediately disappointed with the size of the chopped pieces. Even on the course setting, the pieces seemed very small to me - just short of nut meal. I haven't tried the fine setting, as I have no need for nut meal.
I remembered as a kid my grandmother had a crank nut chopper that seemed to do a very good job of chopping pecans so I started looking for one of these vintage nut choppers on eBay. As it turns out, there's a never ending supply of those old Androck brand nut choppers being sold on eBay. I quickly bought an Androck chopper that looks very similar to the one I remembered from my childhood. After thoroughly cleaning the item I put it to use and was surprised to find the size of the chopped pieces to be almost identical to those produced by this Prepworks chopper on the course setting.
I find the small pieces of nut produced by both choppers impart a different taste to foods as compared to larger pieces of nut that get noticed when you bite into them. Since the Prepworks chopper only provides the choice of either very small or tiny pieces of nut, I'm deducting one star.
I've only used this chopper for a few small tasks, but it seems to be sturdy and well made. It produces very small pieces of chopped nut, and performs this task very well. If you don't mind the small pieces, you will likely be happy with this item.
I've decided to go back to a sharp knife, where I can chop nuts to the exact size I want.

I would definitely purchase again!!
Worked great for 6 months. Then screw top of base cracked and about 1/3 of the diameter of the top broke off. When it was working, the grinder produced a reasonable mix of ground walnut pieces and some powdered walnuts that you'll get no matter what you use to grind.
Then the upper lip of the screw top of the receiver (where the nuts fall into) began to crack. Fortunately, I discovered the cracks before they fell into the ground nuts, and carefully removed the affected plastic. 4 more months of careful grinding and looking for more damage after each use, and at least half of the lower receiver is now cracked and I've had to remove the damaged parts, again to make sure they don't fall into the receiver.
So if the life span you expect from this grinder is 6 months, you'll probably be fine. As I still plan on eating ground nuts for more than 6 months, this model is already in the trashbin, and I'm off to find a better nut chopper/grinder.
Had it not broken so early/easily and lasted even a few years, I would give it 5 stars. Heck, I'd even pay more for it to get that performance out of it. But I'd rather buy a stronger, more expensive model than replace one every 6 months. Also note, I never abused the chopper or ground anything but walnuts, which you can easily break between 2 fingers, so I don't feel responsible for strongarming this grinder or having unreasonable expectations for it. Perhaps it was defective from day one...I'm just not inclined to buy another one to find out. At $10, I also don't have great expectations for any kitchen tool...my 1 star review is simply based on it's performance, not it's price/performance value.
I replaced the Prepworks grinder with a PL8 Nut Chopper from Amazon.
Very impressed with it so far, including these features:
1. The clear base is made of a much thicker clear material that is shatter proof, so I shouldn't have the failure that doomed this Prepworks model.
2. The top of the PL8 grinder fits most standard wide-mouth mason jars, so chopping and storing larger batches of ground nuts is a breeze. Once your finished grinding into the mason jar, just put a screwtop lid on the mason jar and your done!
3. The top with the chopper blades has a rubber ring that seats much better on the base or a mason jar.
4. Cost is ~$20, so good value considering you'll never break the base, like I broke the Prepworks.
