But another theme in the book is less appealing – Tom’s grinding struggle to “have a life.” We are presented throughout the book with the story of Tom’s dysfunctional (if understandable) upbringing, and his work with a gifted therapist…frankly it gets a bit old, and seems more like a repeating excerpt from a diary. It is the primary reason Tom was led to explore more spiritual disciplines for relief, yes, but the details wear on and on, and ultimately draw attention away from the fine analogy which concludes with a compelling Theory of Life, if you will. I recommend it, though, if only for the fine observation. Psychological problems are like back pains: they are all different and all respond differently to various therapies. But certain readers may find great sympathy for Tom’s crisis of identity and benefit from his painful stories of living with his “old” operating system,” finally to achieve peace and enjoyment in his nondual life in the present moment.
