My experience with meditation in the yoga world has been much more spiritual, ethereal, and not very specific in true instruction.
What I appreciate about the book is it provides a very clear, not overly spiritual nor overly scientific, explanation about exactly HOW and WHY meditation and mindfulness work.
In addition, it gives clear instruction on how to begin and how to overcome the inevitable obstacles when they present.
In the yoga world you are maybe given different anchors or positions to sit in, but never really given any explanation on how exactly how you are supposed to get better; just keep practicing. And while practice doesn’t hurt, it is still helpful to be armed with tools for overcoming obstacles that may be blocking your progress.
I also think it is really accessible for those who want to start meditating but have zero background knowledge. Readers don’t have to come to the table with anything!
