I have already started to recommend this book. Marci not only tells the TRUTH, she tells it in such a way that you can really understand why "things are the way they are", what we do as actors that trips us up in the audition room, and most importantly - how to see the business as a whole, so you don't feel like a victim to it, but a part of it. Marci lifts the "fog of not knowing" so that we as actors can see that we are powerful, needed and an essential part of the process. Basically, she will show you that our job in the room is to be present, real and to GET OUT OF OUR OWN WAY.
Marci Phillips clearly loves actors. Her excitement for her job leaps off every page.
On one hand, she offers the wisdom and boundless compassion of a seasoned metaphysician; her observations apply equally well to the art, craft, and business of acting, plus life in a much greater sense.
On the other hand, she gives the kind of practical advice indispensable to professional actors looking to perform at the top of their game.
Pick up "The Present Actor" and give it a good read. It's a love letter to performers everywhere, and I can't recommend it enough.
To your happiness, health, and dreams fulfilled!.
Her book asks you to believe in yourself and push yourself to reach or exceed the standards you wish to achieve but also to be generous and loving and accepting of yourself along the way. Its practical wisdom to help artists balance and moderate and most importantly, create and achieve.
She generously shares some of her own personal experiences and recounts stories she's gathered along her career to show how everyone and anyone can suffer from a bad day or a bad audition or a bad choice. Being an actor is tough and I think many artists succumb to depression, anger and through these negative emotions, a certain amount of suffering. The point is to keep going and to replenish your soul and artist with the experiences, learning, support, exercise, therapy, laughter, etc., etc. you need. Its about the journey, not the finish and Marci's book is a big reminder to all actors to enjoy your life and career as much as you can. Many thanks to her for writing it!
I booked a job after reading this book. Read it and apply what works for you.
If you're serious about being an actor, read this book.
I've been a working actor for a few years. After reading The Present Actor I knew there were things I could improve upon. Part of me was a bit sad that I didn't read it sooner but the wise part of me knew the book presented itself at the perfect time.
After reading this book I BOOKED A CO-STAR ROLE on a new network show which shot this week.
Thank you, Marci :-)
