Gr. 4-7. Billed as the first children's biography of the 43rd president, this paperback will come in handy for libraries needing information now. But unlike many "instant" books (this contains a chapter about the 2000 election), it won't date too quickly, because the biographical information is solid and the writing engaging. Gormley takes the straight chronological approach: George W.'s birth in Connecticut; the family's move to west Texas, where George spent an idyllic childhood marred only by his sister's death from leukemia; his rather uneasy stints in eastern schools such as Andover and Yale; and an adulthood that drifted until he became anchored by his marriage, fatherhood, and his decision to go into politics. Bush comes across as amiable, always popular, yet surprisingly unsuccessful in many of his endeavors. Gormley succeeds in setting Bush within the context of both a famous family and interesting times. He was a devoted son and the antithesis of a 1960s hippie. Black-and-white pictures are well selected, but the inexpensive paper stock on which they are printed sometimes makes them look dark. A bibliography is appended, but there are no source notes, not even for quotes. Ilene Cooper
