Update-day 2- perfect waffles.
Update -I don't know how many days. It's still working, and handy, and I've named it Steve.
3 cups rolled oats
1 ripe banana
+ 2 1/2 cups of water!!!
+ Oatmeal, Blended (1/2 cup)
+ Almond Milk (1/4 cup)
+ Banana (1/4)
+ Applesauce (1 tbsp)
+ Egg White (1)
6 Large Eggs
1 Cup Uncooked Oats
2 Teaspoons Peanut Butter
2 Teaspoons Honey
150ml Low Fat Yogurt
Crack open one whole egg into a mixing bowl
Separate the other 5 egg whites into the mixing bowl
Mix the 1 egg and 5 egg whites
Add the cup of uncooked oats
Mix well and set to one side
Peel the bananas and slice up on 2 plates
Heat a large frying pan and cover with non-stick spray
When the pan is heated, add the oats & egg mixture
Cook for about 2-3 minutes - the "cookie" will become golden brown
Carefully flip the cookie over - remember it will be hot, so don't burn yourself
Cook for a further 2-3 minutes until golden brown
Remove from stove
Slide the cookie on to a flat cutting surface
Slice the cookie into 4 equal pieces
Spread some peanut butter on 2 of the slices
Pour a little honey over the slices with the peanut butter
Put the other 2 slices of cookie on top of the peanut butter & honey slices - making a little sandwich
Place the 2 cookies on the plates with the sliced banana
Pour some yogurt over the cookies - and serve
We used bananas in our recipe, but you can use any fruit
The waffles are a pretty good size, and although we didn't measure it, you could fit probably 3/4 or 1 C of filling in each one- more if it's something that mounds nicely like ice cream. We tried filling the waffle bowls with good old butter and syrup, canned apple pie filling, and cheesy scrambled eggs. All 3 versions were great. 2 waffle bowls each (not filled to the top) made us really full. I'm planning to make chili in a couple of days and want to try making cornbread waffle bowls to hold the chili. We're also going to try taco waffles, chicken and waffles, smaffles (waffle bowls with melted chocolate and marshmallows), and one of the recipes in the instruction booklet for chocolate waffles with raspberry cream. I'd suggest using a pancake or waffle recipe that you know you like before you judge the waffle bowl maker.
The one downside to this waffle bowl maker is that obviously you can only make one at a time, and the waffles deflate a little bit as they sit. I kept the cooked waffles in my oven set to 200 and they were a little flabby after a few minutes, though still bowl shaped. In the future, we're going to try bringing the waffle maker to the kitchen table and doling out the waffles as they finish cooking. That means everyone won't get to start eating at the same time, but each waffle only takes 2 minutes to cook and pouring in the batter/pulling out the finished waffle is very minimal work, so I think it will be fine.
I can't guarantee this won't end up at a garage sale in a couple of years because it is pretty silly, but we're excited about it for now. Time will tell how much we actually use it.
Normally I don't review something so quickly after purchasing it, but this waffle bowl maker currently has only 2 reviews. If it stops working or has problems, I'll update the review.
I've attached two photos of the very first waffle bowl we made. It's on a normal sized dinner plate, to give an idea of size.
