In the homespun days, food was usually fried in a big cast-iron metal pot. But modern times demand simpler solutions. The Presto GranPappy electric deep fryer fits on a countertop and is so easy to use. Just add oil, plug it in, and in 15 minutes it's heated up and ready to fry. Its sleek, black bucket shape matches form to function-- simple and classic.
The GranPappy holds up to six cups of oil or three pounds of shortening, and it can accommodate up to six servings of food at a time. The internal thermostat keeps the oil at the optimum frying temperature. An accompanying scoop, slotted for draining, is for lifting food in and out or for turning food halfway through the cooking time. The power cord has a magnetic safety connection, so that if the unit is jostled during cooking, the cord will disconnect, shutting power off immediately. After straining the used oil, it can be poured back into the unit and stored, covered by the accompanying snap-on plastic lid.
After frying, unplug the unit and allow it to cool completely before attempting to empty oil. Wash the GranPappy with warm, sudsy water and dry it thoroughly; it is not immersible. To preserve the nonstick finish, inside and out, do not use steel wool or harsh, abrasive cleansers. The Presto GranPappy measures 8 by 8-1/2 inches. Presto guarantees this product with a one-year limited warranty. A simple instruction and recipe sheet is enclosed. --Garland Withers

Gran Pappy is bigger than Fly Daddy Elite definitely. And Fly Daddy's bottom isn't flat, it makes hard to clean.
I recommend Gran Pappy if you can't make decision which is good.
Using the manual’s recommended cooking times for thighs and legs, and anywhere within the given range of temperatures for both, the skin got blackened and burnt before the inside of the chicken was cooked thoroughly (no pink).
If you want nice, golden brown skin *and* cooked chicken, this deep fryer is not going to do the job. If you don't mind burnt, black, hard skin, then you'll be satisfied.
I’ll be returning this.
Hence the reason for buying a new one.

The best deep fryer for home/family use. My mom's had one for many years now and I now know why. Easy to use and store away as compared to the bigger heftier oil fryers out in the marketplace. This heats up quickly every time and fantastic for cooking. It has no temperature regulator so you cannot set temperatures. However. Very easy to clean and dump out used oil. The cord is attached at the base magnetically so you can detatch the cord also for easy storage.
It comes with a plastic lid on top. Bottom line since it is such a simple unit it works wonderfully.
As such I leave you with a fried chicken recipe below with respect to using this (and all types of) fryer...
"The secret to good fried chicken is a real crisp skin. This is a great little fryer, but with chicken you need an extra yet worthwhile step to have the best fried chicken you ever smacked your lips around. This fryer does that but not if the bone-in chicken is raw, the temp of this fryer is too high for raw, bone-in chicken and what happens is undercooked chicken, even legs. But there is a way to get around that and it makes the chicken much better anyway.
What you need to do is place the pieces of chicken you want to fry in a pot, cover with cold water, add salt to taste and, what I like is a healthy dose of Tabasco sauce. Enough to change the water color and to smell its aroma. You can use whatever herbs or spices you want to impart in the flesh if you like. Bring the cold water with chicken and flavors to a boil uncovered. Once it comes to a boil, remove the chicken, do not boil too long. Let it sit out to dry, it only takes a minute or two for the hot chicken to dry itself, Then, however you want to coat it, I dip the chicken in buttermilk and then flour. Let that sit at least fifteen minutes, as long as it does to let the oil come up to temperature, this gives enough time for the buttermilk and flour to adhere, making less mess in your oil and a better crust. Fry three pieces at a time if you like but no more, it doesn't take long to bring it to a beautiful golden color. Place it on a rack, never on paper towels to drain, that will keep your chicken crisp on both sides. Once cooled slightly, plate it and you'll have yourself some real good fried chicken."
While making sure that internal heat was reached, I burnt the outside of the chicken. That's because I was too excited and didn't leave chicken at room temperature.
Make sure to leave your chicken out at room temp for 30-40 depending on size, this way it will cook through. Makes chicken so juicy on the inside and crispy and crunchy on the outside.
Find it so much easier and quicker to deep fry my chilli in there without all the coughing than doing in a wok.
Heats up to 350-70 within 10min. Unplugged easily when done using with the magnetic plug. Easy to pickup, to filtered, to clean and to store the oil to use for next time.
Read someone else review, Whom ever used the lid to cover while frying is doing wrong. Oil does splash just a little, depending what you are frying, so use a splatter screen.
The lid is thin so you don't struggle and spill oil when uncovering. Make sure not to touch the hot surface area while and after using. Cover once it's cooled.
The scoop! It's not as bad as I read from reviews. Yes it's plastic, but it's strong enough to withstand the heat. Wide enough to mix, scoop, drain and transfer..
I love this and I recommend this to anyone looking for a deep fryer. Doesn't take up to much space either. Good investment so far!
It arrived in its original box, little packaging which was fine. A bit of a dent/smashed section on the side (whatever, shippers throw things) the fryer is the PERFECT size, it honestly looks like a regular big can of paint that you would buy from any hardware store. Easy to move, easy to store too!
I put it on my counter and looked for the plug.... and there was the biggest crack near the bottom and sure enough the missing piece of plastic was found in the box. Now I'm waiting for my replacement and gazing in bake shop windows at the donuts I could have made myself *insert sad heartbreaking music here*
I'll update my rating once I get a new one.
*****UPDATE: New fryer arrived within 3 days and this time it was in perfect condition. Simple to use, just plug it in. Takes roughly 10-15 minutes to come up to temperature and that's it. The only dislike is having to wait quite a while for it to cool off in order to put the lid on (which isn't really that bad) I highly recommend this fryer! Btw, the donuts were perfect ;)
The only negative was our oil choice. We bought Avocado Oil, thinking good for over 400 degrees, but we did had some slight wiffs coming up from the oil, like the temperature reaching the start of overheat for the oil, which is another added level of unhealthy. So some oils say higher temp but for sure you have to find a good high temp oil. There are only a few types that can reach these temps without smoking.
But this is a very simple easy unit to operate.
proves that getting back to basics is the way to go. this fryer is so easy to use. thank you.
