The directions say to season the waffle plates with an oil after heating them... listen here! That would be a big mistake on your part. I purchased two of these, I seasoned one and did not put oil on the other. I began cooking with both of them immediately, the seasoned pan began to stick ferrosiously after 4-6 uses! I had to process a return for it, even after cleaning it repeatedly with warm water, slightly soapy water, oiling it again... this pan was not coming back to its former glory. I am grateful that Amazon was quick to send a same day replacement. I have since then been using the replacement (un-seasoned) and I have no problems whatsoever!
The waffles come out perfect. They can be cooked to any level you desire by just leaving them in the waffle iron longer. The upright storage is handy for my cupboards, however I must say; I don't use the timer, I just 'eyeball it'.
Sometimes you buy things and feel like the manufacturer has just burnt you. But, after this purchase, I feel like I'm a WINNER!
5 starts times 5 stars for the flip side waffle maker! The reviews were right on point!
JUST DON'T SEASON THE WAFFLE IRON!!!!
-easy clean up ( pretty much, no clean up)
-non stick surface requires no sprays
-makes crispy on the outside, soft in the inside waffles
-the verticle mounted position of this waffle maker takes up less space in your cabinet
-the built in digital timer looks like it works for some, but we have not used it, we just wait for the steam to almost stop, then we are done
-makes really awesome tasty waffles, just buy it, you won't be sorry!
I do recommend this waffle maker!
I actually like the timer, but you can't set it to partial minutes, such as 3.5 minutes. You set it to 4 minutes for example, and it decrements on whole minutes, until during the last minute it counts down by seconds, so you can stop at 30 seconds (to get 3.5 minutes). It beeps a few times with 1 minute left, then you can watch the seconds count down to zero (and beeps more when no time is left). I find it easier than running over to the microwave timer, plus we're sometimes using the microwave to cook other stuff at the same time...
I used plenty of vegtable oil (on the machine and in the batter) but the waffles stuck. After oiling, the first waffle comes out OK but not the next waffle. My wife reminded me to use Pam spray (I didn't due so earlier due to the warning in the directions stating doing so makes waffles "mottled"). Using Pam made them come out 10x easier and they looked the same as before. My wife also reminded me that at hotels, they have/use Pam spray for the waffle makers and they come out fine.
Need to make a LOT of batter - each waffle uses almost 1 cup! I forgot to measure how thick they are. One of the best selling models on amazon (Oster) states the waffles are over 1" thick. I think these are 1" thick or more too. I also wonder how wide the various models' waffles are (the bigger the better!). One waffle was enough for me.
Only thing I dislike is that when closed, the two halves of the handle do not seem to be tight together. Maybe that's on purpose to ensure the metal griddles(?) touch each other instead of the handles hitting first instead.
To store it upright, there is a U-shaped plastic piece which rotates upwards and holds the two halves together...it does not hold the halves tightly together and doesn't seem super reliable. Seems OK for temporarily taking up less room on the kitchen counter, but when not in use I'm storing it in the original foam + box in the basement.
It seems durable but probably would break if dropped very far - it has a plastic "frame" just like the traditional rotating models. The hinge is very smooth though, unlike the traditional rotating machines which seem to "catch" as you rotate them.
Oen last thing - the manual shows the left half on the ocunter and seems to say that is the "base" you pour the batter on. Instead of flipping halfway through, you immediately flip the machine, so one side is up basically the whole time, yet they seem evenly cooked. I think the idea is to spread the batter on both halves/sides. Both halves must have heating elements in them.
